      Newb Tank

Hey everyone! Just joined a few days ago and fired up my first SW tank. It's still cycling, so not a whole lot to see. I have a LOT to learn, so despite my anxiousness to get it all set up, I'm in the "Hurry up and wait" phase. The most expensive part so far was the Kessil, the tank itself was a thrift store find.

What are you using to cycle the tank? Keep an eye on parameters, read, read read, and take it slow, it's easy to get the "bug". Your wallet will thank you.

Thanks everyone! I have a local enthusiest who I've been talking his ear off, so I figured I'd spread the pain around a bit! Right now it has Scripps water running through it with live Carrib sand and dry rock. The filtration system is a layer of floss, charcoal, floss, then bioballs and ceramic noodles. 3 thermometers (classic stick on, the one from the heater and a real thermometer) along with a drop-in Hydrometer. I think it's in day 4, so I have quite a ways still to go before into'ing fish. Right now it's waiting on the ammonia and nitrite test kits and coral research. I'll be phantom feeding the tank eventually and if the tests come back good then I'll be dropping in coral after grabbing some RODI water for backup. It's a 20g tank with what seems like 15g of display +/-, so this will be a Nano in almost every sense of the word.

Oh, and Sushiboy, I'll definitly take you up on that coral offer! If you think the book is helpful, I'd appreciate it! Right now my research hasn't been that extensive, so every bit helps. I probably won't be ready for coral for a week or two. I need to run the tests first, see what adding the live sand and dry rock did to the water and then give it a week to see if it's still stable.

Cycling the tank will take about 2-6 months. If you add some live rocks from another established tank would help speed things up. I’m sure sushiboy wouldn’t mind giving away some small live rocks

If you use Dr. Tim's you can have fish within 10-14 days as it finish the cycle. I've done my last 4 tanks that way, so much easier.

Well, at least one of those Zoa should look familiar Nano, I couldn't have started it without help from you and Satsujin! It was great being able to see your tank and I think we'll be working with each other again soon.

One thing I would recommend is a refractometer. Don’t rely on a hydrometer. You can find them on eBay for about $15 or so. Also, bio balls are not really recommended for reef tanks. They are good for fish only tanks, but over time they will induce unwanted nutrients into your system.

I can also hook you up with a couple small pieces of rock to seed your tank faster.

I'm not getting notifications either! Weird. Yeah, I'd appreciate any help. I may possibly have a few hours avail tomorrow...If you have any zoas or anything you want to part with, I don't mind parting with a few $.
