      Help with decision on powerheads....

      Hello

      I have a 120 gallon tank (48" x 24" x 24"). I will be having a mixed reef of LPS, SPS, and softies.

I am debating which powerheads to get. I really am looking something with adjustable power output and QUIET!

So far, I am looking at 2 MP40's or 2 Gyre XF230's with advanced controllers on both and linking the two of them...

I am open to whatever suggestions yall may have, but please let me know.

      Thank you,
      Neil

I'd go with the mp40's if you have the money. I have had both in a 125g 6' long tank. The mp40's are easier to do maintenance on, good customer service and better controllability imo.
A cheaper option that work well for me before I had the gyres or mp40's were the jabeo rw8's and rw15's, great propeller pumps that I had zero issues with.
      Hope my opinion helps

Someone selling tunze 6105’s here. 2 or 3 of them would work nicely on a 120 gallon tank

I say Gyre!!! I’ve seen some really nice tanks and they both run Gyre. Nothing but great reviews. The gyre is cool IMo, high flow on top(sps) then medium flow down low for the water coming back up. Dutch reefer on YouTube uses 1 gyre pump on his big tank. Check it out.

If going with the gyre, I'd go with the 250 over the 230. I say mp40s cause, less parts to clean, less maintenance, quite, cord outside the tank..less heat transfer and the different flow patterns you can create. The gyre comes with spare parts and bearings, requires more maintenance parts and pieces. Both are great choices.
The tunze pumps are nice but I've only owned 2 which were in a comline skimmer and comline filter.
It's a tough choice for sure. I'd still choose the mp40's hehehe

Another vote for the Gyre here, I'm actually using the IceCap 1k in a 90g running the random pattern at 30% ramp cycles and it's doing well. If I crank it up to 40% or more it's too much, I've also mounted it vertically so the flow hits the front glass and I can clearly see the movement on my duncan in the center of the tank. I like the wide dispersion.

Why not 1 Gyre and 1 MP40? I might have one of every pump in my tanks and each moves water in a different way.
