      Learn from my mistake

So I walked down to my living room today and I noticed a slight fishy smell .. I figured the tank needed a water change so I step onto the my stool to take the mesh lid off to prep the tank and what do I see .. poor Hugh my flame wrasse laid there dried up from jumping out of the tank. The tank only has one small opening aprox 3”x3” that was cut out of the mesh for the fish feeder when I go on vacation. The lesson here .. cover the tank completely even when you think it’s unlikely they’ll find the one small opening to jump out of. Nothing worse then finding one of your prized fish dried up outside of your aquarium.

      RIP Hugh

That sucks! Sorry for your loss Kris. Wrasses are suicidal. I had a glass lid on my tank and found a dried piece of carpenter wrasse jerky pinched in the seam between tank & lid as if he had to try really hard to get in there.

That happened to me too except it was only a 1" hole. I have since fit a plug to it when im not feeding. I also 3d printed a custom feeder that fits in the hole when i go on vacation.

That’s crazy but what’s even crazier is how you smelt it I’ve lost fish behind my tank and never even noticed

I was thinking the same thing. If that fish had jumped up my nose and was flopping around in my nostrils I might have noticed it. Probably not have smelled it though.

      Shame, beautiful fish.
I have lost fish from jumpers as well. I just let the feed go through the 1/4" mesh. I don't use flake foods, so it works.

Even w/ a 1/4" screen top I once lost 2 helfrichi's the same night somehow, it happens even when we do have tops sometimes, but of course I still encourage using a screen top.

My cooling fan turned on and he was chilling on top the mesh screen. If the fan wasn’t blowing pretty much directly over him I prob wouldn’t have smelt anything.

Sorry to hear. Yes always make sure you are 100% covered. I have found the Eheim feeder with pellets is best if you go on vacation. The pellets fit through the screen so no need for openings

I’ll be getting more flame wrasses after I move in 4-6weeks. Hit me up if you want one

For sure man, I’ll be looking for a small female. The female I have in my tank is already shifting to the male coloration after my super male passed so I’ll let her transition and pair her/him with a new female.
