Angry Cobalt Neo-therm 200w. Almost fried tank!

Just got home something didn't seem right not sure when it happened but the heater is stuck at 94° and got up to 87.5 fml...explains closed up.gsp and detached jb..... definitely dropping the Cobalt to a water heater for mixes and nothing more even after I get it replaced via warranty.
Almost fried my tank would have lost a good amount of money in the thousands. I haven't had time to go through check everything as I panicked added some top off rodi that was cold and fan after removing heater.

Looking for a truly reliable heater any recommendations are appreciated.

Many reports about them failing. I would ask for a refund since it’s under warranty? Why get another when it may just happen again?

Dude!!! Wow, that’s horrible. I’m glad to hear you caught beforehand. There’s a guy on YouTube called DIYFishKeeper and he had a cobalt heater explode and nuke his freshwater tank. It killed two of his spotted stingrays!

I use eheim heaters set to 78, but also connect them to a separate temp controller. I’ve used them without a controller for years, but having the redundancy makes me feel much better.

I’ve also heard good things about the finnex titanium heaters. Livinlocal uses one and we ended up finding out that it doubles as a grounding probe haha.

Good luck on your search man!

      doubt they will refund
It's the 2nd heater . I will only use it for warming my mixed water for water changes nothing more.

yea I have heard the stories I had the first one for a little over 2 years and it was spot on, then one day no heat ...just on but nothing. Then the 2nd ond. Over a year great and bam now it went to 94 and got my tank to 87.5 but tried to adjust temp but nothing when pressing or holding the button. Def will be looking into another heater.

I'm not sure what exactly im missing trying to read the differences but 2 kids jumping on me makes it hard.
One is prewired and the other ...isn't? This will be my backup for my next heater.

Ok I'll probably just grab the 800 watt little overkill for tank but never have to worry about it not doing the job.

Johnny I have to get an Apex eventually
Brandon do you run it off an apex as well or a controller?

I'm running mine off my Apex as well. Any temp controller will work though

when you buy an apex do you need to buy a specific component for the heater?

No, just plug it in to the energy bar and set the program through fusion

Nice I'll need to buy a new apex then but until then a 38 buck controller will do just dont understand what the difference it between a prewired ond and one that isn't? What exactly is prewired?
