Have fun reefing but don’t forget we all take risk

Saw this article and I thought I’d share it.
Looks like another fellow reefer almost died. We all take risk we just have to stay educated and keep each other informed.
Not the first article I’ve seen but seems to be becoming a norm.

Palytoxin doesn’t kill people. People kill people.

I can already see the future. Palys and zoas soon to be banned because they look scary.

I've gotten p.t. in my eye at first thought it was just itchy after a week of thinking it would go away blurred vision 1 eye then photophobia(sensitivity to light) sun hit it, felt like someone was stabbing my eyes with an ice pick. After Urgent care they gave me antibiotic drops helped for the night with the pain. Then next day back to the same issue. Went to eye specialist he gave me steroids and dilation drops. Had to redo the dose cause it came back after I stopped. Total of 6+weeks with a screwy vision all because I didn't thoroughly wash my hands. It's no joke, but we cant get complacent.

I've got some of the green palys which I understand are more likely to have that palytoxin. If I want to rid myself of them is it safe to put them in the trash (outside)? I don't want some random waste disposal worker getting sick because I threw palys away.

I hate palys, they are super potent and kill anything in their vicinity, they are active feeders and grow really fast and can overtake a rock in no time and everything in its path.

I had a rock with palys growing on them, I would zap them with manjano wand once to keep them in check. One time I got tired of doing the wand thing and scraped them off the rock with a brush. Next morning all my corals were closed up, even the SPS started to change their color, possibly zooxanthellae was dyeing off. My hippo tang I had for several years looked like crap. My corals recovered in few days , but my hippo died in a days.

I scraped my had by some palys many (maybe 10) years ago. Got a skin rash that would not go away, needed to apply some prescription topical steroids cream to make it go away. Even till today, If I keep my hands in the tank too long, same rash comes back. I wear gloves as often as I can.

They also killed a beautiful maxima clam I used to have many years ago.

If there is one thing I have learned form this 20+ years of hobby....Stay away from Palys.

      I hate palys !!!

I would let the rock dry off completely (leave it out in the sun). After that, if you want to be sure, bleach the rock in 20% solution.

That's scary man. Eyes are so precious to us. I agree, we get complacent. I think I am going to start wearing gloves whenever I work on the tank from now on.

"Corals don't kill people, people kill people" HAHAHAHA

What out for all of the scary "Assault Paly's!"

But seriously, palytoxin is serious. I believe the only ones that *might* have it would be the ugly brown/green button-polyp types.

Oh, @PK - I read an article awhile back about someone that had let their button-polyp covered rocks dry in the sun, and then some time later put them into water to cure with a protien skimmer... the Skimmer aerosolized the dried palytoxin and made the entire family very sick. Perhaps dry them out, and then soak / rinse in water outside, while wearing a mask?

I'm more than willing to get rid of the entire rock. I just don't want unsuspecting folks at a waste management place getting ill because I threw away a rock.

I think theres quite of few plays that have the ability to cause damage not just 1 specific paly. As far as the rock just trash it after drying it out not worth all the hassle and work and chance. Unless its an amazing scape piece.
