I’m curious. We all do water changes right? Why not Fill a new tank with 50-75% established water from a fellow reefer, and 25-50% new water. Throw some established biological media in there as well and the BB in a bottle, and you shouldn’t have to worry about crazy ammonia spikes right?

There is very little beneficial life in the water column itself, so that won't do much, but doing WC's alone w/ new or scripps water will help keep amo down just by dilution, but it's not like using established water will help or do much to actually cycle a tank.
Established LR would do much more to help cycle, that is where the majority of your beneficial life is.
There's a fine line between owning your tank, and having your tank own you!_________________________________________

That makes sense, but I figured beneficial bacteria had to consume some of the ammonia in the water. In any case, taking cycled media, using established water, and adding BB should help greatly reduce cycle time right? Then just add a single hardy fish and call it a day

I’m going to test the Scripps water tonight and see what the levels are at. I’ll post my findings

Tests didn’t turn out great
Sodium: 1.023
API:
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Salifert
Kh/ alk: 6.4
Ca: 395
Mg: 1170
I’ll test again if someone brings me another water sample. I might look at more reliable tests for ammonia and nitrates tomorrow
