Hi, I'm new here, and new to Salty tanks :D

So, I tried to join the reef society but the website seems to not be interested in that. I'd like to come to some meetings.

Anyway, I'm getting ready to set up my first reef after several years of keeping freshwater aquariums.

It will likely be a 40 gal running a 20 sump, skimmer, good return, pulsating wavemaker, refugium in the sump with an algae I can't kill LOL, and a few gobies and cardinals (I fell in love with Bangaii cardinals at the store the other day, and fell in love with tiger gobies when I saw them online).

If anyone wants to point me to where I can find out when the next meeting is, I'd love it.

      Thanks, and hi to all!

      Welcome!!

Gobies and Cardinals are very cool!

I'd look at hawkfish too - slightly aggressive, but they sit on the sand bed or rocks more than they swim. Lots of character and hilarity watching them

I already know some of the corals I want to start with LOL.

I want a silver xenia (yes I know they take over stuff, it will have its own rock) and probably some "easy" leather corals and zoas.

      Welcome!

I am not sure when the next meeting is, but if you browse through the forum you will find a section regarding meetings. .

As for the Xenia, it will definitely take over your tank, and segregating it to its own rock will not do much at all. Little pieces of it will fly off and grab hold somewhere else in your tank, then take over that section as well LOL. Looking back on my last eight or nine years of reef keeping, if I could go back in time and change one thing, I would go back and make sure I never put Xenia in my system. Hahaha

With that said, if you want some Xenia, I will give you some for free. About once a month I cut branches out of my tank. I just recently tried to trim everything out, and thought I got everything, but it keeps popping up in places it never was before. So yeah, if you want some I’ll give you some for free LOL

I am the only one I know who had a Xenia die-off. All other corals were fine with though.

Yeah I know, but it's such a pretty coral! I would love to pick some up from you once I get my tank set up and settled. And if it grows like duckweed, so much the better (I like unkillable stuff. except duckweed, I hate that. it's ugly and kills everything)

I will definitely look up the club on Facebook! I live in El Cajon, but work in Mission Valley.

I've had it. Happened right after a spike in hardness.
