Today’s attempt
What do you mean as far as a sand substrate? As far as something under the sand? I went with 180 lbs of aragonite and I’ll add 20 more of live sand once I put water in it.
I’m just waiting for the Neptune flow meter to show up so I can plumb the return pump.
I also went and epoxied every rock to each other being that I’m now in Cali. Don’t need anything tumbling with a midnight quake.
Ok, I thought about it after and thought maybe you were asking what was under the rock, which would be black egg rate. I usually set them up like that so the rock doesn’t rest on the glass. I cut off the excess and leave just what’s under the rock. It also makes it easy to play around and pivot the rock formation as a whole when trying out different positions.
That is a good idea, I don't like rock right on the glass.
And about earthquakes... that is my greatest aquarium fear. Now, it is not something I always think about, but every time I think of earthquakes I think about my tank smashing into the floor and exploding. The stand is not really made to withstand lateral forces, and if it tilts more than a few degrees I think it'd collapse. If I had kids I'd anchor it to the wall for sure.
So after considering my potential fish list, I was advised that my rock work was not conducive to the habits of tangs. I reworked the rock islands and allowed for some swim throughs and hiding spots. I think this looks better and also allowed me to add more rock for filtration benefits.
I ended up with a total of 190 lbs of rock and 180 lbs of sand. I still have a 20 lb of live sand which I’m trying to decide wether to add or not.
I’m almost done with the control panel area. I need to add a small shelf on the right side for my dosing pumps. I put in a door activated led strip which lights the bottom area very well. It turns off 30 seconds after closing the doors.
The sump is still one of my favorite spots. I like the clean look of it. I had some sediment settle on the bottom when I added a bag of live sand but I’ll vacuum that out in a bit. I’m going to go with an exterior ATO container. The stock one (7.5 gallons) only lasts about 2 days.
I went with these sump cups instead of socks. I cut some foam to snugly fit in each one and will hose them down when needed. No more socks to wash (hopefully).
I’m looking to pick up one of those clear lids with the netting. I always have the luck of carpet surfers. I don’t understand how other people say they go years without any.

I found a great deal on a new NYOS Quantum 160 Protein Skimmer and snatched it up, $140 off retail!
Also, I ordered a clear lid from Artfully Acrylic. I’m looking at having two halves made instead of just one big one. This I believe will make maintenance a bit smoother than removing one big lid.
So I repositioned my indoor camera to get a good view of my tank and I like how it just blends perfectly into that nook.

I added some more Green Chromis to add to the bioload and get the cycle moving.

I’m getting a bit of a resonating hum from the Sicce 9 pump. I don’t know if it’s the way it’s plumbed or how it’s attached to the stand with the clips or a combination. I’m considering getting rid of the flow meter and just running flex tubing from the pump to the return.

I’m really contemplating switching out the stock plumbing with 1” pipe.
I also put a small shelf in for the dosers this weekend.

So while everything is still cycling, I want to work on my fish list. I’m looking at a sps dominant tank with about 3 tangs and other fish. Here’s my tentative list to pick from. Thoughts? Also, my lfs has a very nice Desjardini Sailfin Tang that I’m thinking of getting.

Tank looks awesome!!
I’d just be a little concerned about how those unions are attached to the tubing, doesn’t look like there’s barbs coming off the unions?

Dang, your tank is nice as heck. It's super clean and all the gear is set up really nicely
No big changes lately. The tank is cycled. I picked up a couple of clowns, a small spotted Rabbitfish and a yellow tang. All ate quite well after being acclimated.
The biggest change was the swap on the pumps yesterday. I took out the SICCE 9 and put in the Ecotech Vectra L1. What an obvious difference in the quietness. There was no annoying hum and even though it’s a bigger pump, the flow is amazing. My brittle star and Nassarius snails all came out from the detritus that the new pump is kicking up. Even in the morning they were still out and about. I am running the pump at 100% right now which I believe is 3100 GPH. I might turn it down but not in a big hurry.
The clear lid should be here in a couple of weeks and the NYOS 160 skimmer should be here this Friday.
Very nice set up.
