Hey all fellow reefers. I haven't been on this site in quite some time, like a few years. Well I am back. A few months ago I had a massive dieoff in my 40 gal reef tank. After the last coral and fish died, I decided to do something about the valonia and hair algae that would not go away, no matter what I did, so I let the tank run without lighting for a few months. On the 4th of July weekend, I turned the lights on and all of the algae was gone. So I took all of the live rock out and rinsed it off real good, took all of the sand out and rinsed it until the water ran clear, put sand and rock back in and mixed a whole new batch of water. Cleaned out the skimmer and power heads. Tank is pretty much like a new setup now. I added a damsel and a green chromis a week ago. Thank looks good, but 2 weeks after the teardown and rebuild I am seeing green algae cropping up again. I may add a few tuxedo urchins and a foxface to keep the algae under control. I will add a pic of the tank shortly...
