      Cyano and hair algae battle

      Hey guys!
Well, I've been fighting cyano and hair algae for the past month or so and have changed almost ALL my equipment out to higher end stuff (wave maker, skimmer, lights, added phosphate remover, and added an ATO) and I still couldn't get rid of it. So, I finally dosed Phosphate RX and Chemiclean last week. The cyano is almost all gone but then I noticed today that the hair algae started getting light colored and stringy. Is this normal when it starts to die off or am I looking at Dino? I have a lot of air bubbles in the tank right now so I can't say if it actually has little bubbles on the tips of it or not. Any help is appreciated, my tank is in desperate need.

High end equipment isn't as necessary as high quality top off water as the possible cause. Mine wouldn't go away until I paid more attention to that. Treatment should be secondary to finding cause.

Yeah, I figured maybe crappy lighting causing the algae so I bought prime HDs so I could control spectrum. I got an xf230 because I maybe thought flow was poor and I could program that, then I figured the HOB skimmer wasn't cutting it so I got a Tunze 9012 because I thought it would do a better job. I didn't have an ATO so I just threw that in and then I replaced all my filter media in my RODI unit because i thought it might be high TDS. I then added a phosphate media because I didn't have any. I probably should've posted my reasoning but I tried keeping it short.

Hopefully it was the RODI unit...fingers crossed. I just got scared thinking it was Dino because I heard that could really mess a tank up, so I started panicking.

Well, there is something to be said about quality lighting. "Inurmind's" post has some high end lights I've never seen before so I Googled them and one of the things they said about the, was "Cyanobacteria free spectrum" so I hope that helps you. Did you ever check your TDS?

Oh dang, I should check it out. Unfortunately I didn't have a TDS meter so I couldn't check it. I just thought I'd take the safe route and replace all 6 stages of the media. I think my DI resin was really old. I bought the BRS color changing one so I would know next time around.

TDS meter probably would have been cheaper. Just saying. But your gear is way nicer now. What kind of used stuff do you have for sale now?

Lol this is probably true! I started panicking haha..the lights are probably no good because of the salt creep all over them but it's a Current Orbit marine led 48" and I have a CPR BakPak2 and a gyre 150.

You didn't think a GYRE was giving you enough flow!?!

I got sucked in by the new controller being able to do a 24 hr programming haha. That way I can vary it so much more...I know I know, I probably shouldn't have watched that Marine Depot commercial on it haha

What all critters do you have in your tank? When I over feed my fish, skip water changes, and let the maintenance slide that is when my algae starts growing. If I let that go, in comes my CB-Bali-Red Slimer Cyano. (Anybody need a frag?)

The flip side is that if I knock my phosphates and nitrates to zero, the sps start retracting.

"Ever since the Fall, the most difficult thing to maintain is balance."
