      1st SW build

Hi guys/gals. Newbie here. I just wanted to share my 1st SW build with you guys. My tank just arrived last week and I was able to set it up over the weekend. I purchased Fluval Evo 13.5, Hydor Koralia circulation/wave 240 pump, hydor wave controller, cobalt neotherm 50w heater, fluval water/room temp monitor, CaribSea Arag-alive special grade sand, reef saver dry rock. I would include a pic but I dont know how to attach one. Thanks for reading😆😆😆

Sounds cool. The easiest way to post pics is to open a photobucket account and copy and paste the img link into the thread here.

Nice looks good. Just watch flow facing down towards the sandbed don't want to continuously kick it sand. But that's a small hydro. Sp it's not crazy output just calm flow.

Thank you CMD! So far no sandbed storms...I read the reviews for the type of sand I got and alot of ppl were happy with it. I have my controller set up so it alternates from the Hydor pump to the stock pump. No problem so far. As you can see in pic the rubble thats in the chamber meant for Skimmer I opted out of and will try to do a refugium in that chamber. Any suggestions on refugium?

Nice tank I just set mine up at work recently too. Same one but I got the skimmer that went with it. Upgraded my return to an mj600 and added an rw8...but have it on the lowest setting.

Good luck with the tank! Any other plans for upgrade or livestock?

Thanks sdnd! I love your hammer? Or is that frogspawn? Ha not familiar with all the names of the corals yet. I do want to upgrade the light to Nano mini Tide but its gonna take me a few checks since its about $300. Did you stay with the stock lighting?

Yea I'm sticking with the stock lighting since I like the tank with the lid...really keeps me from having to top off as much. Also I'm just doing easy corals nothing to light intensive...zoas and the hammer and mushrooms are doing well so far. I just added an sps closer to the top but won't know for a few weeks on how it'll do.

If you're parting the light out let me know.

What you going to add first?

My plan for my tank is just beginner softies...the lil cave rock im making that a zoa cave. I do want a hammer and poly star and mushrooms. The first fish i want to get a Black ice snowflake clown, then a royal gramma. Also a randall goby and randall pistal shrimp and also blood red fire shrimp amd thats pretty much it. You are right about having a hood would be better for water evaporation but I do like the look of rimless. I'll let you know my plans for the hood but for now im stickin with stock lighting. I want to do a refugium in the chamber where the skimmer was suppose to do. Do you know how to do that? Is it just stick some sand, rubble, and chaeto?

If you want to make a fuge don't add the sand or else it'll be so hard to get it out later...plus I think rock and macro is enough for nutrient export but you need some sort of light to grow your macro...

Also with as much livestock...just be diligent on water changes if you don't have a skimmer. I have a fire shrimp but if I go all reef may get rid of him lol...

O yeah, I normally do weekly water changes on my FW tank. I have a 6g Fluval edge for my rasboras and guppies. So im already use to weekly maintenence. I've read that fire shrimp are reef safe? Why would you get rid of him?

Congrats on starting your S/W tank! I remember starting mine 13 years ago. Go slow and let it cycle and mature. It's a great hobby, welcome aboard!
