      Clownfish breeding question

So I have a female DaVinci and a male frostbite that seem to be laying eggs as we speak. Maybe I'm just excited and they are not having babies but I want to ask this question anyway.

What would be the babies be if the DaVinci and frostbite breed?

Unless you collect the eggs at the right time and place in a breeding system w/ live rotifers they would be called...food.

I believe that a Frostbite is the cross between a DaVinci and a Snowflake Ocellaris. So I'd guess that you'll have a good chance that they'll turn out to be either Frostbites or DaVinci. I think.

There are so many variants these days it's really hard to stay on top of the names

Yup, I checked and they did lay eggs! Whoohoo.

I'll do a little more research and see if anyone has posted what this kind of pair produces.

I'm sure there is info on them already but if I can't find anything....I will call them "Jules".

Yeah, I got stay on top of things (breeding system and food) so they have the best chance of survival.

I think these are both fish from Sea & Reef Aquaculture, I'd check their website to see if they've attempted that cross, or email Soren over there and ask.

It's always cool when your clowns lay eggs.
Just FYI the first few times they lay eggs(Happens every two weeks) they are not the best health or quality, so most let the first few bathes go, but it's great free food for other fish.
Joyce Wilkersons book on clowns has the best breeding info

Yeah, it's got my family super excited. Ha ha.

But we know the first couple batches might be difficult since the eggs are in a tight spot to get to, there is a pretty aggressive purple tang in there, and we aren't setup yet (putting everything together today though. My cardinal has babies as well but I think he may have swallowed them since his jaw is not as big ) I might have to move the tang to another tank.

      Things will work out though.

I called Sea and Reef and they didn't know of this cross yet. Guy said it might be a first.

I also checked Matt Pedersen's list of hybrids and couldn't find anything there either.

Guess we will wait and see how these guys look once they are born.

It's day 8 (Monday) and hoping these eggs hatch soon. I read that the eggs will hatch once they are silver, you can see the eyes, and once it's pitch black (lights out). I can't remove the eggs since they are in the back corner and not easily accessible....so I have to shine a light to see if they hatched. The problem is that if there is anything light then it could delay the process another day.

Last night I waited about 1.5 hours after lights out (made sure it was dark in the room) and used a small flashlight aimed at the back wall. (I also shut off the pumps to allow them to swim freely). No babies yet. Should I wait longer in the next couple days or do what I did today?

I know the clowns will lay again and patience is also key but I also want to get in the habit of doing it the right way.

      Thanks for any advice.

Congrats on your breeding pair. It is very exciting when they start to lay. I don't know if anyone has attempted and raised that pairing due to the concerns about having two parents with the snowflake gene. However, since you asked, here is the genetic breakdown and the different types of offspring the pair may produce:

      Unique Genotypes: 9

      * There is speculation as to what happens with Snowflake Double Dose. It is most likely a death sentence. This could hold true even with other genes present, but is currently unknown.

Amphiprion ocellaris "Snowflake Double Dose"* Sf/Sf DV/DV 6.25%
Amphiprion ocellaris "Snowflake Double Dose"* Sf/Sf DV/+ 12.5%
Amphiprion ocellaris "Snowflake Double Dose"* Sf/Sf 6.25%
      Amphiprion ocellaris ("Frostbite" X "Frostbite") Sf/+ DV/DV 12.5%
      Amphiprion ocellaris "Frostbite" Sf/+ DV/+ 25%
      Amphiprion ocellaris "Snowflake" Sf/+ 12.5%
Amphiprion ocellaris "Wyoming White" DV/DV 6.25%
Amphiprion ocellaris "DaVinci / Fancy White / Gladiator" DV/+ 12.5%
      Amphiprion ocellaris +/+ 6.25%

So the first batch is gone. I missed the hatching and all the babies went MIA. Just bad timing on my part since I checked the eggs and they were still there, went to play a game of Halo, checked about 15 minutes later and they were gone. =(

I will be pulling the rock on this next batch and putting it in a 10g tank with the airstone, heater and all that good stuff. (covered on all 4 sides, etc). They were laid last weekend so I will be keeping on eye on them these next few days. First eggs hatched at day 9.

My Black Ice also laid eggs (bad luck since I think the nem they host with completely engulfed the area the eggs were at and they went MIA at day 2. I saw the nem was touching the eggs before it even fully opened up. we were not expecting these guys to lay eggs so it was a surprise). a broken piece of clay pot has been put in the area so they can be out of reach for the nem and easily removable. hopefully they lay again this weekend.

Not sure if anyone really cares but I thought I would post my experience just in case. =)
