Guys I was wondering what would happen if I removed my trims from my 20g and 40 breeder to have that rimless look and if stability is an issue what if I replaced those trims with clear trims

Seen a ton of people do it
You will need as much of those cheap razors as you can get I think ace hardwear has them for like 10cents a piece and a heat gun
You will pretty much just need to heat up the plastic and the silicon and slowly pull off the rim and then use the razor to take off the extra silicon. And then finish off with vinager
I bought a heat gun then returned it since I was being cheap lol
But if you can buy a rimless tank I would go that route just because of the work
I'm really worried about the tank coming apart on me on the 40 breeder what size tanks have you seen people do them to?
Also does the thickness of the glass come into consideration

I would advised against derimmimg a 40 gallon breeder. My breeder bows out in the middle when fully filled with the plastic rim on. It's disaster waiting to happen if you do.

So what about the idea of using a plastic trim instead then clear so that it gives the rimless effect

The trim actually helps distribute the weight(the bottom), and helps strengthen the seems from the top. I agree with Mantis, I wouldnt do it.

Is it just that rimless tanks are thicker they are able to be rimless?

Ok, here is my advice. If you are worried about what could possibly happen if you remove the plastic rim from a tank then I personally would not do it. You are constantly going to be worried about something going wrong with it and would never fully enjoy the tank. If you like the rimless look then I would spend the extra money for a "true" rimless and not have the worries about a DIY modification that might or might not work. I would also add that just because removing the rim for someone else might have worked doesn't mean that it will work for you, every tank is different even if it is from the same manufacturer.
That's true dam haha might as well just leave it on thanks everyone don't want to come home one day to a disaster

So it wouldn't be possible to build a rimless one either?

Are you comfortable with your glass/silicone skills? I personally wouldn't trust just anyone.

Haha never mind probably not the best idea either I'll just stick with what I have now thank you everyone

Test it with a small tank so if there is an issue there isnt much to worry about. Set it up in the garage or something.
