Triton is testing using the industry standard for water testing, ICP-OES/AES (Inductively coupled plasma optical/atomic emission spectroscopy) combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Personally I would trust an instrument that costs between $10,000-30,000 and is operated by trained people. There is always a possibility of calibration errors and operational issues with any lab operation. If the test is run professionally those errors should be negligible.
I started it out with LOL... it wasn't meant to be serious. my dad works for the world leader in HPLC and UPLC equipment manufacturing. I worked for the company for a long time. i know more about it than alot of folks.. I trust what triton put out. My post was meant in jest, i should have phrased it better.
I guess my tank might be cleaner if i used salt. I just cannot get over adjusting to the mixing part i'm so lazy. But i started using the kz coral system, gonna see how that works with scripps. I just add alk and ca, sometimes mag when i water change.
And for what it's worth, i've never had a mag titration kit i've believed in. Mag is about as loose a number as phosphate. Maybe cause they are both at the limits of the test range, phosphate being low and mag being high.

I could run a sample of this water on my ICP-OES at work if that would add value to this study. Easy-peezy. At least for Mg and a few other cations.
I'm pretty new to SD and I don't actually know where to get water from Scripps (though I work in La Jolla). Perhaps we could help each other...?

Hey! I didn't forget about this. The chiller on my ICP went down right before the holidays and I haven't been able to get it fixed yet. I'm expecting a replacement early Feb, so I will run the water samples as soon as I am able to install the new chiller.

The sodium was a little higher thank the curve, so I might not trust that as much. Also phosphorus was really close to the bottom of the std curve (0.1 to 1000 ppm for all elements) . The water was run in duplicate at 10x and 100x dilutions to try to cover everything. Zn, Mn, Fe, and Cu were not detected.

For convenience, and since I am doing it out of my own curiosity anyway, I will see how it compares to the triton test.
I am not sure if I am reading the triton test right, I am using the numbers in the "analysis" column, i assume those are the numbers that resulted from their analysis.
