      Question Sps/bayer dipping advice...

So I have heard many swear by it... so as a noob to using bayer, here's a few questions the pros can chime in on to help myself and other interested in using bayers.

      1. Is there a specific Bayer to use?

      2. Ratio of mixture?(tank water : bayer)

      3. Ammount of time to leave coral in dip?

      4. How frequent should the dip be in order to avoid stress?

      5. Processes required or recommended before/after dipping?

      6. Side affects to expect and not worry about?

      7. Other than bayer is there another safe sps dip?

Feel free to throw our your past experiences and steps to treating.

      Thanks in advance.
      Mike.

I've used all kinds of dips from lugols iodine, revive, bayer, and recently melafix. I was using revive for a while until I was introduced to melafix. I like it because it works and the SPS don't lose coloration after dipping. Make sure to get the melafix that says "Heals Bacterial Infections". Just follow the instructions step by step and you'll be fine.

That link from Cherry Corals pretty much sums up the bayer dip. I use bayer for every coral that goes into my tank. I mix 10ml of bayer/1 cup of tank water and dip for 5 minutes to 10 depending on how the coral looks and what I might find on it before dipping. The only thing that I do different is I do a 4 stage rinse to really make sure that all the bayer is rinsed off the coral and whatever it might be attached to. I did just the 2 rinse step and almost killed all my fish because there was still residual bayer.

Agreed with all the above info, I think one of the most important things to remember is to thoroughly rinse the corals post-dip several times. Even small amounts of this will kill off your pod population in the main tank as well as possibly affect other life. Remember this is a strong pesticide and should be treated with caution.

I would agree with everyone about making sure that minimal residual makes it into your display. I rinse three times and shake the frag out of water each time to shake the water drops off lol.

Any thoughts on how long the dip can be stored and how to dispose of used dip/rinse water?

Bayer loses its potency once diluted and by oxidization. Ie air and h20 so cant be stored long term, you have to mix a new batch.

The down side of bayer is you have to rinse very well as it will kill off the other bugs in the tank. pods etc. thats the main reason I use hydrogen peroxide(reef safe) instead and still use a three step tank water rinse.

Keep in mind bayer, peroxide and others dont penetrate EGGS, and if an invert can hold its breath or is large enough to withstand the dose, there may be no effect(ie nutibranch, flatworm & spider eggs and acro crabs etc)
best advice is quarantine after dip and research says flatworm exit (FWE) in quarantine, is the most effective on penetrating egg sacks over time.

FWIW Peroxide dosing in tank can affect and kill problem algae, cyano, diatoms bryopsis, hair algae etc, but also beneficial bacteria in large or extended doses and naturally corraline algae.
