Re-do LEDs in Nano Cube LED Pro hood

Two of my LED strips failed on my hood, so I painstakingly replaced the LEDs on the strips. During that time I also switched to using 6 LDD drivers so I could dim them with my Raspberry Pi, and the sixth strip was for 400-420nm LEDs. Then a few weeks ago I noticed 3 strips were dead and I decided to replace all of the LEDs. I decided to glue the LEDs straight onto the heat sink instead of using the strips.

      Removed old strips:

Cleaned up heat sink and marked positions of LEDs:

Glued down new LEDs and soldered one strip, tested functionality:

      Soldered the rest:

      Test at 1%:

      With reflector:

      Finished:

looks very cool and clean! I might need to ask for some help if I decide to add LED's to my new tank. It will have 6 t5's but im actually thinking of taking out 4 of the t5's and adding LEDS in the middle. probably for the future though lol

I see you're using the Raspberry, ever look into Arduino or Robo Tank software? Was hoping to get your thought on it if you've seen it?

Hello, yes I was originally going to use the Arduino to control the dimming but I quickly realized that if I wanted to use it for anything else (like installing a web server and building a web based control panel and logging etc) it would become a cumbersome process. The raspberry pi, if you are not familiar with it, is just a mini linux machine so their really are no boundaries to its functionality. The distribution of linux it uses, raspian, is debian based so installing software is very easy. I am also using the pi to control an 8 socket 120v power box and all functions of my fish tank... could it be done with an arduino? Maybe. But for me personally, it was much easier to do it with a raspberry pi. It is more powerful, comes native with hdmi, usb, and ethernet.

edit: I have not heard of or looked into robo tank.

Very cool stuff! Just getting back into the hobby after a long break and came across this thread and am blown away by the endless possibilities thanks to things like Raspberry. I love tech stuff so I think I might just have to pick one up to play with.

If you get a chance I'll leave a link to Robo Tank. It's a controller based on Arduino platform, still in beta but almost complete. The think that caught my eye was his GUI and integration of a touchscreen. https://www.robo-tank.ca

That is very nice. Well put together. I considered refining mine in a similar fashion, containing it all into a single power box with 8 sockets and an ethernet port, and plugs for things like light dimming, ATO switches, and thermo probes for potential commercial sale but I figured it would not be worth it in the end. The market for it would be rather small, there would be definite liability associated with selling it (fish dying, flooding, fires, etc) and certainly there would be tech support issues.

The raspberry pi is nice, I recommend getting one just to tinker with! I started with an arduino, I love stuff like that.

To be honest, one of the main reasons I wanted to get an aquarium was to build a controller for it

HaHa! I was just excited to get a tank going again after 10+ years so this tech integration is just a huge bonus for me cause I love this stuff too.

Great job on the LED's, I just picked up a RSM 130 so I'll probably do something similar. Appreciate you letting me pick your brain!
