DIY lens cover and some test photos

I was at reefers garage a couple weeks ago and saw louis' custom pvc lens cover for coral pics. Tonight I made my own, and took some test photos. PVC from home depot is a 3" coupler for .89 cents, and a scrap piece of acrylic glued to the end of it. Tomorrow I will probably router off the excess acrylic to clean it up a little.

      Some test photos:

Tri Color Valida under blue LEDs

      All LEDs

Fruit Loops Zoas under blue LEDs

      All LEDs

      Rasta Zoas under blue LEDs

This one was sold as a superman monti, but sure looks like a rainbow monti to me

Forest Fire Digi, making a comeback from the dead

      Unknown SPS

      Alpha and Omega Zoa

      Mushroom

      Acan Enchinata

      Acan Lord

Yeah pretty happy with it, especially for what I spent on it. Need to figure out a way to control zoom, and focus with this over the lens next. And it would be great if i had a macro lens not just the stock one.

That's a nice "RG LX Super Limited Release Coral enhancement tool!"

(NIce pics!) I want that "mushroom."
I have been looking at some similar ones at AW (on their not for sale shelf for a year+)

      +1 Rainbow Monti.

Great pics I wish my garf bonsai's were that purple, I bought a nice big piece from Reefers but it was brown and its just starting to turn purple on the tips, still trying to get my nitrates down to 0 though and its hard cuz I have a lot of fish. Im going to try and make a lens cover also where can you buy the acrylic?

Mine took a long time to color up as well, I think that Unknown sps was supposed to be a garf bonsai, but it has just encrusted for about 2 years with just a couple little nubs. As for the acrylic, if you are in north county there is mgm plastics in San Marcos, if you are south rid out plastics is in the 163/52/15 Kearny villa road area. Both have a scrap bin where you can get smaller cut pieces pretty cheap.

Unfortunately I have had that mushroom for many years, it made one baby mushroom that didn't make it. It is one of my favorite mushrooms and I wish it would multiply so I could share it and ensure its survival.

      Thanks Rudy.

Made some changes today, cost me a lot of time in sanding and polishing. Figured I would router off the excess plexi material and be done. I didn't take into account how bad I would scratch the front in the process :-( I should have taped it up to protect the finish but I didn't think that far ahead. Ended up having to sand it with 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1500 sandpaper then use novus to get back the nice clear finish. Oh well live and learn, I'm happy with the end result tho.

Some more coral pics after the "upgrade"

      Red Planet curtesy of whiskey

      Hawkins echinata from sunlit reef

Bob the blob jr (elephant sea slug) from oceanslide

      Montipora Undata

But seriously, its a canon t5 with the stock lens. No editing or anything on any pics, I have no clue what any of the settings on the camera do, besides the no flash one, just straight point, focus, click, upload, post. Thats not saying there might not have been 500 other pics that got tossed in the trash.

That makes it even better. My Iphone is old and my pics look terrible. Although the camera on my wives Iphone 6 are as good if not better than my DSLR. I was thinking about making something to be able to use filters. Orange filters seem to really help when shooting under the blue LEDs

Thought I would share some more....

Little nemo's the day before they hatched

Just thought this is interesting, these two pics are the exact same coral, I cut the smaller frag from the main colony. It got into a war with a favia in my frag tank and almost completely died. It has grown back but no longer looks like the mother colony.

      Frag

      Mother

Mummy Eye Chalice, one of my favorite corals

      Bi-Color Frogspawn

Anyone know what this sps is?

      Or these zoas?

One more of the tri-color valida, it is just a photogenic coral

Last one for tonight, I can't seem to capture the colors of this surf n turf for the life of me, not sure why this one just washes out the blue tips.
