If you have shop vac hose, siphon him out with it, and if that fails, Rudy suggested the only humane option that is left,

      "sharpen a stick"

there is one more way, with the flow shut off, pour a half liter bottle of Tonic water, {or sprite, or 7-up},(Tonic water has less sugar-contamination) into the over flow. The CO2 will make him pass out really quickly. Fish out the limp fish and put him into a 5 gallon bucket of clean replacement water, with air if you have it! He should wake up if you did not leave him in the low O2 environment tool long. I usually hand 'swim" the fish in the clean water to force clean water over the gills. Then, siphon out the water/sprite mixture and replace with new water, put the happy swimming Houdini tang in a safe place, or give him to Rudy.

I have packed the bottom of my overflow with plastic grocery bags to scare him to the top and sit back with a net ready. If you used enough bags he can't go down.

Markymark came by to the rescue and sucked him out with his shop vac. The guy came out and was fine. Plus I got to clean out the overflow so everything worked out well. Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I gotta get the sailfin and a coral beauty out. Will be posting up as soon as their yanked

You sucked it all the way into the shop vac and it was fine? That is amazing, I thought that would kill a fish for sure

Use your hand. Least stressful. You'll be gentle. It's kind of an amazing feeling too getting to hold some of the amazing life from your tank.
After all the nets traps n stuff failed I always wound up doing it by hand. Now that's where I start. Usually goes faster too.

I couldn't get my hand all the way to the bottom of the overflow. The tang didn't go all the way in the vac we used a narrow end and just sucked him up to the top lol

Yeah I felt bad for it but I figured it would work. Better than killing him.
