      Disposing of Salt Water

Sooo... One of my neighbors... the annoying one that calls the cops if your car is parked more than 3 days on the street accosted me while dumping a bucket of salt water in the gutter.

My main tank gets dumped down the sink drain and my garage tank gets dumped in the gutter.

Just curious if anybody knows of any regulation that forbids the dumping of salt water down the drains or in the gutter.

The only think that might even touch on it that I have found is below:

      http://blink.ucsd.edu/safety/researc.../sewer.html#ph

Not a government site... and my pH is ususlly about 9.3 so I don't imagine it counts...

Anyway... mostly curious if anybody has any knowledge about this, and what you do with your waste water from the tank.

      Thanks!

I dump mine down the toilet as some sink drains have metal traps and will corrode easily

I usually dump mine down the toilet, but I don't have a septic tank. The salt water can kill the bacteria you need in there. I don't believe there is anything wrong with dumping saltwater down a storm drain that leads to the ocean, which is just more salt water. Every once in a while I will take it outside and dump it down the gutter but not usually.

Geez, do you live next door to Mrs. Cravitz? Your dumping ocean water into the ocean! Tell them to pound sand!

Your neighbor "think blue". Here is a link to city of San diego storm water department. http://www.sandiego.gov/stormwater/about/index.shtml.

Remember that your storm drain is basically a fresh water system until it hits either an estuary or the ocean. Short term its not a huge problem, but long term take a look at the Salton Sea to see what is happening when you put salt on land.

You should never dump tank water anywhere except in your home drain such as the sink or the toilet. Can anyone say "Caleurpa outbreak"? Just because your tank is a saltwater tank doesn't mean that what you have in it isn't harmful to our local environment, including the ocean. While I do not like neighbors that report you to the cops every chance they get, I would side with him on his concerns. Nothing wrong with dumping it in the toilet.

Caulerpa/misc macros is the first thing that I'd be concerned with as well. I always dump it out in the gravel near my porch.

Good point Dave and ABC. My assumption was that they both ran into the same system. Doing a little more reading I see that they are separate. Interesting.

Well I guess I will just keep dumping down the drain.

      Thanks for all the input!

I also had to have the city out to look at my garage because one of my neighbors (not singled out by the city, but I am pretty sure I know who since she mentioned it during the "incident") reported me for running an aquarium repair business out of my garage.

The agent was like, "You sure have a lot of aquarium stuff in there." I said, "Well I have a lot of car parts in there too... does that mean I am running an auto parts store in there as well?"

I dump my dirty water down the driveway into the storm drain. I'm vigilant about caulerpa, thats my only real concern but the only caulerpa i've seen grow was eradicated from my sumps some time ago. Our drains never get water of any sort up here, other than sprinkler drainage and the occasional car wash.

I used to dump down the sink but getting 25 gallons per week down my toilet might take awhile.

Don't waste your time oppeasing the idiot! it takes multiple complaints for the cops to investigate anything and when they hear their time has been wasted to investigate saltwater,,,, well thats how i feel about that! i also have a niegbor who tries to rally the most craziest complaints, niegbors want no part of the lady!
