JSchnepf's first attempt at a frag rack

Well my frag tank has run out of room so i wanted to make a frag rack for my display to hold some extras. I have a pile of scrap acrylic and figured it wouldn't take me long to build one, I was wrong. Spent the first 30 minutes cracking acrylic with drill bits that just didn't work trying to make half inch holes fairly close together. I finally found a 1/2" 4 flute end mill at a slow speed worked perfect and got to drilling.

My final rack ended up smaller than i had originally planned but it still has holes for 39 frag plugs. I cut it down to size with my table saw and a dull blade. Thats what i get for using it to cut aluminum as well.

I welded the pieces together with some weldon 4. And made some countersunk holes for the magnets to go. Then i added another piece of acrylic over the magnets to seal them in.

Here is in the tank. Unfortunately the magnets i had aren't quite strong enough to support the rack once it is full of frags. I was planning on mounting the exterior magnets in a pice of acrylic similar to the ones in the tank. But i put that project on hold for now. I went ahead and ordered some stronger magnets and will make a new improved version once they get here.

Looks nice! Maybe add one or two diagonal support on the bottom as well.

      Good work though

I have larger more powerful magnets on order. Doesn't look like they are going to get here until next week. I may trade this initial one to someone with a thinner tank for a frag of something, or I may just cut off the third row of holes so it doesn't have so much leverage/ weight pulling on the magnets. But I'm going to wait till I get the second iteration done before I decide anything.

Well it looks great. Did u find a good online magnet place? Always wanted to diy frag rack but magnets alone killed my dream. Would love for u to share if that's ok?

The first set of magnets i got from amazon, I didn't know anything about magnets, they were cheap (about 5 bucks for 10 with free shipping) and I didn't know there were different strength ratings. Apparently neodymium magnets are rated from n35-n52. So for the second set I ordered a ten pack of 3/4" N52 (strongest) from eBay. I wouldn't call them cheap (about 20 bucks for 10) by any means but DIY isn't always about doing it the cheapest but doing it yourself is the reward.

Nice job, looks similar to the ones I have done. As you found out, drilling the holes doesn't really work. You have to mill them. A router works well but the drill press with an end mill is a much better set up. Where did you get the end mill from?

I agree with you whole heartedly. Diy is just plain fun somtimes. Testing your self. Getting exactly what you want etc. Your work looks great. You found some great price magnets though 20 for 10 isn't bad. From the little I know about magnets.

I would have to look up where I got the end mills from. I went a little crazy when I got the mini mill for Black Friday last year. I think they came from littlemachineshop.com along with the vise and some other odds and ends. I bought some stuff for it from Amazon and harbor freight all when I initially got it. It was a fairly inexpensive set of 2 flute and 4 flute end mills from 3/16" to 3/4" I think 20 in all.
