Is Kalk a thing of the past?

I was talking to the owner guy at aquatic warehouse yesterday. I was looking to start using Kalk, and was hoping to buy some there. I couldn't find any so I asked if they have any kalk for sale. he rolled his eyes and told me how they don't use kalk anymore and tried to sell me on the three part stuff, calcium, alk, mag, that they sell.

my question to you guys is, does anybody use kalk anymore, or has everybody gone to specified three part dosing. Just trying to get a better understanding if kalk is still a good option. Ive read many articles that say kalk is the best way to go,...so please regale me with your practices.

I have a couple clients that use Kalk. It's great, but it's harder to use and easier to overdose, probably why many people avoid it.

kalk is great, give it a go just be careful. most people dont use it until the tank demand goes up.

      +1 for kalk
That was the first real dosing that I began with, and have never turned back.
Anecdotally, I've noticed that when I've dosed a gallon or so of kalk into my 55gal tank (over a few hours), all my sps show ridiculous polyp extension.
As others have said, just be careful to dose slowly. But if used correctly, it can do wonders.
Also, I've heard it works well for high-demand tanks when used in conjunction with a calcium reactor, to keep ph at the proper levels.

There are quite a lot of people that still use Kalk. Not sure why you would be told that nobody uses it anymore, unless it was to try to sell you more product. If you want to use kalk, make sure that you read up about it and make sure that you understand what to do. It really is not that hard.

+1 on everything above. I find myself dosing kalk probably more than anything else.

Kalk is cheap, efficient, easy. Meaning from a sales point of view, small profit, can be bought at Walmart for cheap, doesn't require various other equipment (even lower sales) for use. Pat is a good guy. But he also runs a business. He'd never steer you in the wrong direction, but this is his livelihood. It's also easy to overdose Kalk. So be carefully. But when done right, it's a really cheap way to maintain you levels.

I'm scared of Kalk so just dose 4-part.
