I've had a system setup for a while that worked really well, I had to take it apart but it was successful while it was up. Now I am in the process of setting up a smaller system in my yard.

What method you lookin to go with for your grow beds? Ebb and flow? Raft? Npt?
      Doing your system outside?

Aquaponics are great, we have a system I set up in our office at work. It's only about 120g of water volume, but incorporates both ebb and flow and raft style, with a 40g breeder aquarium and a custom filtration sump. Running 2x 48" 4bulb t5ho

I want to make my own and do 2,4x8. Grow beds or 4 ibc grow beds.

I have questions about plumbing I want to do 2 media beds and 2 float or dwc. Or 1 four by 8 foot. BEd media other floats. Do I only need one bell syphon at the end of,the system,to,feed into,a,sump?
What diameter plumbing. And,best way to gravitiyy feed my beds? Gaskets. Etc any input would be amazing.

I forgot what ebb and flow mean is that THEY driain and fill, or just constant water level

Ebb and flow is just "fill and drain", you should only need one bell siphon at the end I believe for that size. For gasket most people use Uniseals because they are a cheap replacement for bulkheads, and can be found at any hydroponics store.
For plumbing size I need to know how big your pump is you want to use.. Aquaponics isn't super critical about turnover rates but I'd say at least once per hour.
If you give me what pump you want to use I can determine correct pipe sizing when I get back to my office on Monday ( I have my piping calculators on my office computer)
Also how many pounds of fish do you plan on keeping? You might need to add a radial flow separator/ swirl separator to your system.

ThAnk you so much. I'll do some calculations on lbs of fish.

Is there an old trick to finding out lbs of fish for surface area of substrate grow bed.

Ya there's a lot that goes into it.. Lol here's a good website that could help you out. It's really determined on pounds of feed per day and protein content. I'm probably getting to scientific for a backyard Aquaponics system. But I mean we get all crazy about our reefs why not know how to have healthy food fish and vegetables?
      Here's a quick link on biofilteration http://www.biofilters.com/websize.htm

Check out solution farms they are an amazing organization they help the homeless by working on their huge Aquaponics farm and sell the produce to pay for their workers. Pretty self sustainable and an amazing system that makes a positive impact on everyone. I'm planning on taking a tour in January, they're located in vista.

      Thats awesome!
I'm a systems designer/cad drafter. We do large scale filtration for commercial aquariums, aquatic research, and aquaculture. Plumbing can be a pain but is actually pretty easy when you have a Hazen-Williams calculator. There might be ones online
