The Marine Aquariums Society of North America (MASNA) will be matching donations (up to a total of $5,000) made to the Defense Fund. If you were on the fence because you didn't feel your donation amount would make a difference, this will double that amount! Make sure to donate through the link on the website.

While the priority at the moment for our hard earned cash is to directly support PIJAC in its efforts, I strongly encourage everyone to join MASNA as an individual member as well. It costs next to nothing, but the more members there are, the more powerful the voice is collectively. SDMAS as a club is a member of MASNA and we support the work that they do. Think about joining them. It is time that we all look a little bit beyond the reef in our living room and focus some attention on the bigger picture. If we don't, that reef in your living room is going to vanish right before your eyes.

It's extremely important right now to be factual. As Ret points out, since MACNA many people have gone on the offensive saying our industry is under attack based on the recent listing of 20 species of coral as threatened under the ESA. This is not correct. If you read through anything the NMFS has put out, they place the blame primarily on climate change, ocean acidification, pollution etc.

Our industry is under attack but not from the NMFS. The industry is under attack by groups like Sea Shepard, Snorkel Bob and others.

Does this mean we can relax? Absolutely not! The ESA listing certainly impacts as a hobby and industry so it is still very important to make donations to PIJAC.

The import ban didn't go through. Once again reefbuilders kinda jumped the gun on this one.

The site went down due to a power outtage and I wasn't able to update. USFWS misunderstood what the listing meant. They thought it was a CITES restriction not a NMFS ruling. We're all good for now. Reefbuilders wasn't not the only one that got word of this, this morning. It was on all the blogs. USFWS actually told the importers in LA that they were going to enforce this. It was a mistake made by a USFWS officer not the blogs!

This "scare" might be a good thing for us in the long run. It made people panic, but it did raise awareness and gave us a picture of a possible future, albeit a bleak one.

Also, I don't know about the rest of you, but I really don't know exactly what corals would be off limits. Can someone post some pictures of the types of corals we would no longer be able to buy if this came to pass.

I just returned from Maui and my honeymoon and the reachable corals off the beach show damage from other than collection by hobbyists. You really cannot collect corals in Hawaii for the most part where so many of the corals were nothing but skeletons from the constant touching and contaminants that have destroyed the reef and corals versus collection of them. It is hard to snorkel out to a reef near the beach that does not show the damages imposed on the corals by other than collection. Unfortunately the reefers may take the blame for so many corals that are no longer in the Ocean but we are only one of the smaller slices in the lost reefs, especially considering how many corals are aqua cultured just over the cost of shipping to make them more feasible to own. There are some corals though that should not be collected as they rarely survive and the industry should consider regulating itself well enough versus possible government draconian measures that could ban virtually all corals. The reality is when there is money in the hobby some people will go to any depth to meet a demand.
