U.S. Government legislation against our hobby - Please Read!

I just received this from the Reef2Reef newsletter.

Maybe the SDMAS guys can chime in on this in a more educated way, but this does not look good for my Reef addiction.

      Please read the following article:

This is a much better read. I'll elaborate later since it'll take some time.

Read that the other night. This could end up being a problem. Environmentalists see us as a threat and don't realize that we probably care more about what's in the ocean than anyone. The problem is that in general we don't fight back, making us the low hanging fruit even amongst other groups that cause much more damage to the reefs.

I really liked this comment on the article posted by Jeff:

Ret – thank you for bringing this to everyone’s attention. For those of us who did attend MACNA and the talk given by Julian Sprung, it should be noted that this decision was based on very little and/or inaccurate data.

In addition, it’s important for hobbyists to know PIJAC is diligently working to have these corals delisted as a threatened species while the CBD is trying to have these corals listed as endangered species. These corals are not yet protected, but this is only temporary. When protections are put into place, they will impact both wild and cultured corals equally. It’s imperative our industry and hobbyists support PIJAC and their efforts through the Marine Ornamental Defense Fund:

Jeff, what do you think of the "Ornamental Defense Fund"?

Does SDMAS or SDREEFS have an official stance on this?

To answer your questions directly, we need to donate to the Ornamental Defense Fund. It's our only form of legal representation.

SDMAS as a whole has always stood for supporting the protection of coral reefs through education. Like many have said, these decisions were not based on a whole lot of scientific fact. I don't speak for the entire SDMAS board of directors but I'm quite confident that the rest of the club will agree with me that now is the time to support PIJAC and support our hobby and industry.

If you follow SDMAS on Facebook, you will see that we've been posting information about this for some time with links to donate. I encourage you to follow the club on Facebook as that's where a lot of the information about this has been shared.

      Jeff,

Thank you so much for your response and the link to Facebook. I never knew that Facebook was the preferred SDMAS vehicle for disseminating important information like this.

It might be helpful to run a small awareness campaign to let all SDREEF members know about the SDMAS Facebook page.

I will be donating to ODF shortly.

Just a thought, but maybe it would be beneficial for SDMAS to run an event to get more folks to donate to this.

As always, I truly appreciate your input and your guidance. Thank you for all the hard work you put into SDMAS.

      Adrian

BUMP^^^^^^^TTT. Read this post and attachments. This has been years in the making. Check out this website this is where you can donate to the ODF. https://www.pijac.org/marine If you enjoy this hobby and have a love of the ocean and reefs get involved. Soon we all may be criminals for keeping corals and certain fish. I agree with the post on R2R we will spend all kinds of time on mindless crap, but no one is really bringing this topic up or doing anything about it. I would be willing to pay an additional $5 a year for my membership on the forums to help contribute to ODF. That sounds like a small amount but if all the forums in the US raised the dues $5 it would make a difference.

I put my money where my mouth is...I just donated $20 bucks to the PIJAC. Join me fellow reefers and donate, even if it is just a buck.

Bump to the top to keep the awareness ball rolling. Also, not everyone is on these forums so spread the word when you are in the LFS with patrons and owners alike. I was suprised to find out that a few LFS owners that I have talked to have yet to hear about this over the past few days. Keep the info flowing, this is a broad, wide sweeping act that could very well shut down import, sales (both private and retail), and propigation entirely. Thanks to those that keep this issue on the front burner of awareness.

I really hope that a lot of you read the article that I provided a link to today. The letter is pretty telling and shows you the reality of this ESA listing ending our hobby. This is extremely important. Anyone that owns a fish tank with corals in it should be paying attention to this and educating themselves about the process as much as possible.
