The story behind these little gems starts quite a while ago back in 2007. About a year before the CITES ban on export of live rock from Tonga we discovered a small colony of what appeared to be jet black zoanthids on a small chunk of branching rock from that infamous collection location. Being suckers for anything unusual the colony was moved to a small display where they grew, albeit slowly even with regular feedings. However, due to a mechanical failure that wasn’t caught soon enough, the resulting tank crash led to a loss of the original colony. Since then we have seen other people that also apparently found similar corals on their rocks as well, most of which date back to 2007-2009.
