      Oh, definitely the mangroves! Hahaha jk. I don't know. The algae has more contact with the water but the mangroves take up less space. That's important for me because my plants are directly in my tank as pictured above.

      Do the roots need to be in a sandbed? Current tank does not have sand in the sump, but new one likely will.

      They don't have to be. Just need to have the leaves out of the water and preferably supported somehow, maybe with a bamboo stick like this:
