I don't think that if it was illegal to own in California they would sell them at wholesale, don't think they would have had them out displayed at MAX, and I don't think you'd be able to special order them at almost any lfs in town. The permit has to be had by the collector, not the end owner. I may be wrong, but I don't think so many parties would be so grossly irresponsible and after a dollar.

They are not illegal to own in California so long as they were imported legally. There is no way for the end owner to prove this though. If it were me, I'd be asking a lot of questions of the seller about how he got it and if he had seen the cites permits. If the seller purchased it directly from an importer, then he would have the cites paperwork. If he says any different, I'm not touching that fish.

Lol, I've only had him a few weeks, so he hasn't passed my one month superstition threshold for posting pics.- He lives with Kermit though, so next time I take Kermie pics, I'll take one of him as well.
FWIW, my Scripps scientist friend knows I have him, as well as which wholesaler I recieved him from, and hasn't said anything about my needing a permit.

Got this from coral oasis today:
"This fish was collected by Cortez tropical import. They have permits. You don't need to have one if you got it from us which we got from them."
