      Scan check engine light codes

Hi everyone. Just wanted to throw this out there since a few months ago I was looking for somebody who could help me out here. I now have a scanner and can check and clear codes. If anyone needs some help shoot me a PM. I'll do it for free or a cheap frag. All I ask is you bring the car to me.

This is great, especially since Autozone and such are charging $60 to scan.

just a fyi for people, even if the code is cleared and problem isnt fixed, the computer will again find the code And make the Check engine light come back on.

Thanks wyntersun. I think you would be lucky to find a place like O-Reilly or Autozone that would scan your car at all. It has something to do with CA law, they want to make sure they get their piece of the pie. You are correct about clearing the codes not being a fix for the problem. The codes just send you down the path for making the repair. Clearing the codes and check engine light right before smogging your car will probably result in a failed test.

Yeah when I needed a scan I called several places and they told me they were no longer allowed to scan cars due to CA smog regulations. CA is trying to force you to go to a smog station, pay for a test (for which they charge sales tax), fail, and then get the results. That's wrong and an intrusion by the state government in my book. The only way around it is buying your own scanner or getting in good with a smog tech that will scan it for you really quick. It wouldn't surprise me if they try to take away the ability to buy scanners too. Oh well.

Pretty much. I think mine cost $60 at walmart. It's a simple one but with a smart phone and Ipad I don't need it to tell me on screen what the code means. I can look it up on the spot. Mine tells me the mil codes, pending codes, and monitor status. That's all I need.

it is regulated for the fact that people that are actually licensed to fix the vehicle should be working on the vehicle because autozone your regular parts guy more likely doesnt understand how complicated and adavance these vehicles are and can mis diagnose a car and cost the customer more money than it would actually cost..theres been alot of complaints to the BAR regarding the parts store giving wrong diagnosis thats y they stop doing it...

I work for a shop i temecula and there is a smog shop next door we actually are not allowed to take a customers car to have it smogged unless we have in WRITING permission to take the car . cause if it becomes a gross puluter we are responsible . Legally if your repair has to do with smog most shops are not allowed to do the repairs

It is against the state regulations to work on any emissions related repair unless you're a licensed smog technician..but you can work on your own car but you cannot work on someonelse car..
