      Neptune Probe Holders

What are people using out there for probe holders? I am sure there are tons of DIY solutions out there. Curious as to if anyone has any experience with the Eshopps 3 probe holder. I have seen some nasty reviews about the magnets. Also, the SSA 4 probe holder, anyone?

I use a piece of styrofoam so that my probes are always submerged just the way I want them, regardless of water level in the sump. It is easy, cheap, and very simple to keep the probe tops from being unnecessarily submerged. A 4" x 4" square of styrofoam with holes cut in it for however many probe I have and it just floats around in the sump.

I saw the vertex ones - seems like they are out of stock all over the place. As for the foam option - obviously doable but I would prefer the probes anchored. I have an ATO so the water level becomes a non issue (hopefully), plus I have a lot going on in the sump - wouldnt want the probes to get damaged!

What happens when you shut off your return pump? In most cases the water level in all parts of the sump rises and completely submerges the probes. I have also seen them float out of some holders. With a styrofoam block they will always be in exactly the same spot no matter what. I use the probe cables to keep the styrofoam in one corner of the sump.

I use the eshopp probe holder but modified it and glued onto my acrylic sump. But I know Avast Marine has some pretty good reviews on the probe holders as I believe there magnets are sealed much better than the eshopp version.

Am I missing the reason they shouldn't be fully submerged during a water change?

The official word on Neptune probes is that being submerged occasionally is not a problem, as the probes are all fully sealed. But long term continuous submergence in saltwater can cause the jacketing on the probe wires to become brittle and crack. It's more likely on the pH and ORP probes, less likely on the temp and conductivity probes.

What Russ said and I have had probes come out of rigid probe holders when the sump levels go up during a feed cycle. When the water level went back down, the probe ended up out of the holder and laying across my heater.

That's because your probe holder sucked. At least that's the answer you'd give me

I like the vertex XL probe holder. I have mine attached to my baffle in my skimmer chamber which runs a consistent water level.
