In a few nano setup s I've had, always had a skimmer. Personally wouldn't run one without it, but I've never minded the noise a bio cube skimmer or tunze 9002 skimmer made. Remora is a bit noisier, but still my favorite of those three. If all you've got is softies could probably be just fine with water changes though, depends on your bioload and how much you feed.
