You may not even need a skimmer or the canister filter if you keep up with water changes.

I have a 10 gallon display with 10 gallon sump and I am running a 29 gallon bio cube skimmer. It works great for the size tank and is super quiet with almost no micro bubbles. Plus you can pick them up used between $10 and $15. I like having the skimmer because i just can't keep up with all the water changes, it gives me some cusion. I don't know if a mechanical filter like a canister or other filter will remove the things a skimmer will. I have a 4" sock for the bigger stuff and the skimmer is for desolved particles.

The best thing you could do is regular consistent water changes for a tank that small. Water changes are a nanos best friend.

In a few nano setup s I've had, always had a skimmer. Personally wouldn't run one without it, but I've never minded the noise a bio cube skimmer or tunze 9002 skimmer made. Remora is a bit noisier, but still my favorite of those three. If all you've got is softies could probably be just fine with water changes though, depends on your bioload and how much you feed.

      +1 to water changes

A canister or hob filter could help - there's really no sub for a good skimmer but running bio and chemical filtration will help - just don't forget to keep up on cleaning it or you'll do more harm then good (I'd stay away from using mechanical filtration, just too much upkeep). I run a little carbon and a bunch of the bio cylinders in a hob and just do small water changes and all is good!
