Question Chaeto... When do I thin out this Green Afro???

So I had this nice portion of chaeto in my fudge for along time with slow growth. My fudge light went out and i replaced it with something brighter. It's been a month and a half and I now have tons of the stuff. When do I thin this stuff out or do I even need too?

Agreed, once it has taken over your fuge and sticking out of the water I would trim out maybe a quarter or more and just pass it on. There are always people looking for it.

I'm not giving away pods.... if some end up in the chaeto then it's a bonus.... that's actually how my colony got started. I picked up a batch of established chaeto. What I got is FCFS...... I got to keep some for myself so my colony and fudge stay healthy.

I only thin mine out, when it looks really crowded.
Mine is always floating up near the top of the water, so it's not a good gauge of "when" to remove portions. Simply look through it, and when it starts getting too thick or doesn't have room to grow... trim it back to a small baseball sized piece. If it grows that fast... it'll be back to size again very shortly.

The thing is... you need a large "clump" to do it's job. Too small, and it's not removing the bad nutrients from the tank. There's nothing wrong with too much chaeto in your Refugium (Fuge), unless it's starting to turn brown (dying) or water can't flow THROUGH it. So don't thin it out too much... or, your defeating the purpose of having a fuge (with chaeto) in the first place.

Cool thanks for the tip.... i did notice water flowing a lot slower and now that i thinned it out flow is back to where it should be. "Reefing" the hobby that is a endless adventure. Thank you everyone for your input.
