Don't know if your going to believe this but I have not changed water since Jan of this year. Only maintenance I do is refill Auto Top Off, refill food hopper, scrub algae off screens and display...

Yes, the return diffuses through a row of holes just above the sand and half way up the far right side of the tank. I really like how it keeps the water circulating throughout the tank.
