You should be just fine siphoning it out like Michael said. My siphoning tube is the same one I use for water changes, it's just a pipe stuck in a tube.

Lol, yup. Stronger pump = stronger spray. You probably can use a 1200 on it, but not sure about the drop in efficiency. Have you tried the paper-towel trick on it yet?

People have used a thin sheet of plexi and/or glass and clear PVC glue. Spread the glue over the sheet and sprinkle sand liberally. I'd sort of caution against gluing directly to your tank...
