Try nylon fittings. They are a little bit softer and should fit just fine. I got the fittings at Marshall's in Miramar when I had the OM.

The legs raise the fixture about 4" from the tank, so you could always lower the fixture from 12" to 4" to achieve the same results.

I dipped my new arrivals in Seachem Reef Dip first, then in Revive Coral Cleaner, both at double strength. Usually this would get rid of most if not all of the unwanted critters.
