When I used Scripps way back when, I didn't have any problems with soft coral but my LPS didn't display the best color or growth.

You aren't missing anything. From my experience using both, mixing is the way to go.
Just do small water changes to start out. The alkalinity is much higher when you mix your own. If scripps is down awhile, I bet you'll start to.notice some changes is your coral and you may just...
