Powerhead positioning
Curious as to how why and where everyone positions their power Heads?
How do you decide or know how much power you actually need?
I haven’t used power heads before and now that I am I am looking into how others do it and what’s best or most appropriate.

I have a couple rules I follow but good placement and positioning vary depending on a few things such as what pump, tank, rock work, desired flow pattern...a good rule of thumb is to not have "dead zones" -meaning areas that don't get any flow or that collect detritus. Another good trick I like to use is taking a baster or straw/tube and blow air into/under the powerhead so it gets pulled in and chopped up by the impeller -you can get a pretty good idea of direction and strength by doing that.
You also need to factor in if you're gonna want stronger flow (better for sps) or calmer flow (better for softies).
My favorite goal for a mixed reef is organized chaos, but at the end of the day it's whatever works best for your system.
