Here we go again...

So we bought a new house and I don't have the area I had in my old house for me tank... I broke down my 112 Rimless reef (http://www.reef2reef.com/forums/member-tanks/67999-dream-112-rimless-reef-powerded-leds.html).. I've been tank-less for a little while. I found a 60 Gallon Solana XL, tank, stand and sump from baherrick in Mission Viejo.

I am doing some major changes. I will be going back to metal halides. I will be running 250 watt Radium. The ballast will be the Aqua Medic Reeflex Cube M80 ballast. I will be running 453 nm leds strips for accent, dawn and dusk.

The sump I will be using came with the Solana. Small but I am very limited on space so I will make it work.

I will be using a SWC 160 protein skimmer. I currently have it on my temporary set up in the garage. Seems to be doing a decent job.

Another big change is my scape. I am going from my huge tank down to a 24X24X24. I will be building one pillar for the center front and then I will cut dry rock and wrap it around the overflow. In my mind it looks awesome, we will see. It is still 3 dimensional and will provide plenty of space for sps and lps.

I will be running a JNS Alpha 1 Biopellet Reactor loaded with 125ml of Warner Marine ecobac,

Thats a brief snap show of the build. No lets let the pictures roll.

Here is what my old set up looked like.

This is my set up in the garage. Everything has been in this 35 gallon Tupperware container for 2 months and are growing like crazy. I did initially lose a few nice corals.

LOL.... There in there :ohsnap: How are the corols doing? I will keep you in mind when I start shopping around for frags. I plan to have a cluster of different Acan Lords, Zoas, and Rics. I will have most of the SPS up higher and around the various clusters. I am looking for more contrast and color this go round.

So here is the tank before I started cleaning it up. After I got is home there where a ton more scratches on the tank then I thought. There is a compound I bought that you mix with water. it turns into a paste. I guess you use it with a buffing wheel. I will keep you posed on that.

Update time :) Tank has been repainted. More on that later. I finished my scape. So I had this idea about wrapping the rock around the overflow box and building one pillar in the front center. The rock was to chunky and I couldn't piece it correctly to make it look natural. So I was thinking . I can use my hand saw with my 4" diamond blade and cut a V in the rock and place the pieces like Lincoln logs. I cut the first piece, put it in place then went to cut the second piece and almost cut my thumb off . Well an emergency room visit, 5 stitches and 3 hours later, I finally got home. Needless to say I was very lucky. The blade cut into my bone and fractured it. I have some nerve damage but missed all the tendons. Not sure how I missed them all. I will spare you the gore. Here is the clean version of my injury.

Here is how I cut the pieces.

It takes along time for the nerve feeling to come back if it even does ;( I have nerve damage from my right elbow down and I never regained it...that was 28 years ago... Last year I had wrist surgery in my left hand right where it looks like you cut yours. On my thumb area and the nerves took about 6+ months for the feeling to come back but it did!!! Hope yours does too....

So I got the hood mostly done. The idea is that the hood will secure to the back wall and open via a piano hinge (see pic). It should make it really easy to lift up for tank maintenance. Here are the things that will be crammed into the hood.

The sealed pendent for exhausting hot air.
Three 453 nm led strips. One 24" 1 wattx24 leds. Two 12" 3 wattX12 leds. 96 total watts.
Three variable speed exhaust fans & Controller.

I plan in installing one on each end of the pendent. One blowing air in, and the other pulling air out. That should give me some good air movement to reduce heat. I also plan on putting one on the back of the canopy blowing air over the water. These fans are supper quit. The range from 9-18 db and 120 cfm at max rmp. Eventually I will have all the fans on a thermal switch. I am still trying to figure that part out.

Below is a picture of my daughter and I building the hood.

Here you can see how I was able to get the canopy hinged. It works better then I could have ever hoped. I need to build some sort of brace to keep the canopy open while I am working in the tank. Anyone have any ideas?

With the 250 metal halide & leds on I get virtually no heat to the water line. I have the MH running about 5" awl. This sealed air cooled canopy really works. It has to be the best $70 I ever spent. I was worried about the water temp raising when all the lights are on. Not even an issue. The tank temp is controlled via my apex and set at 77 degrees. My heater actually comes on to heat the water because it cools down, even when all the lights are on  I even have the three fans turned down almost all the way.

My tank has been cycling for about 3 weeks now. With the help from MB7 I made it through the ammonia stage a couple days ago. Just waiting for the nitrite to disappear. I am in the thinking phase for building up my clean up crew. Here is what I am thinking of adding. I kind of stole this idea from Medred on reef central :) Does anyone know where I can get these or order them from?

10 Astraea Snails
5 Nassarius Snails
5 Florida Ceriths
5 Dwarf Ceriths
5 Spiny Star Astraea snails
3 Fighting Conchs
1 Fuzzy Chiton
3sexy shrimp. Because they are cool.
10+ Stomatella
Mini Bristle Starfish (Not sure about these)
Copepods (need a source)
Amphipods (need a source)

First is of the first frags to go in. Keeping my fingers crossed. Three days in and I have great polyp extension and it appears there is new growth.

I recieved some nice peices from Copps on reef central. I have more coming in from Battle Corals and JAR-Z on reef central. I will update on those friday.

Not sure how I missed your build thread...knew you had broken down your 112g and didn't realize you set up a XL60...great work, sorry to see the hand injury. Love the paint job on the XL stand, great work on the canopy. You always do such clean work. Will be interested in what JF corals you picked up....we'll have to work out some trades. I'm actually using an XL60 as my holding tank and it's an algae pit compared to this but your thread actually makes me want to clean it up - I agree, medred's build with his looks great. The aquascape can be the hardest thing for these smaller tanks.

Nice, I should have had someone bank my JF SPS but ended up losing all the ones I got from him in my holding system. Very nice start and I'll most likely have to take you up on the hawkins for sure. Just starting to add livestock to my new tank so will keep you posted. Are you still in San Marcos or did you buy a house somewhere else?

New tank is looking awesome Patrick, the BG Gomezi and other SPS I got from you when I set up my tank are doing great. The "Birdsnest Mini Colony" colored up really nicely as well, check out my build thread if you're curious.

I swapped out my 250 watt Radium to the New Reefbreeder Nova A4 = T5 supplementation. I figured out that my STN issues where related to my 250 MH. I had a Lumitek select a watt ballast (250, 250sl, 400, 400sl) and some how someway someone switched the power output from 250sl to 400sl. I pushing 400+ watts to my 250 watt bulb. Color spectrum must have been crazy stressful on my animals. It bleached out most my LPS and STN most of my acros.... I had to frag all my colonies.

This was taken just after I installed the LED. 3 weeks ago. I am happy to report my acros are back in my tank (all bet is mostly frags and not shown in this video) and are doing great.

I also ordered some crazy collector pieces. I will post pictures when I get them.
Reef Raft USA Peacock Acro
Reef Raft Aussie Gold
Reef Raft Poison Ivy
Reef Raft purple dragon eyes
AV99 Orange Crush Acro
Pink Dragon Tails LE Acro (from Snipersps)
Wet Thumb Double Doozy LE Acro
Mr Packman (snipersps)
Blue Lagoon (snipersps)
red planet acro.

Hello. Here is a long overdue update. This is a iPhone video of my tank as it looks today. Things are back on track and growing. I did switch out the reef breeder led for two radion gen 2s. I put the reef breeder led on my frag tank. I am taking down the frag tank so all that equipment is for sale if anyone in interested.

Sorry for the quality of the vid. Enjoy!
