Well due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to quickly tear apart my reef on Friday. I have all my livestock in a holding tank at AW. This has given me an opportunity to redo the tank and change some things that I didn't like about my previous set up. I am no stranger to probiotic systems and have used Vodka and solid polymer dosing with excellent results in the past. I have done tons of research into the Zeovit system and have messed around it in the past. Here are some things I really wanted to change about the old system...

- No Sand. Traps way to much nasty stuff and never would stay even in my high-flow system.

- No Fuge. Macroalgae can crash and sent way to much algae into my display.

- Adding a sump. I had excellent HOB equipment, but accessibility was a nightmare from behind. This time i'll do it right and get a sump custom built for my tank.

Tank specs...

Tank: 36"x18"x18" Visio glass aquarium w/ low iron front pane. Sump will be made out of acrylic and roughly 30"x15"x12"

Water Treatment: Bubble Magus NAC7 w/ mesh wheel pump and Vertex RX-Z 1.5 Zeolite Reactor.

Lighting: 6 x T5 HO bulbs..

- 2 x Giesemann Actinic +
- 2 x Giesemann Aquablue
- 1 x Giesemann Lagoon Blue
- 1 x KZ Fiji Purple

Flow: QO 2200 return, 2x Vortech MP10s

Decor: All 'Real Reef' Cultured Liverock.

I let the tank sit stagnant for awhile so I have the system soaking in bleach right now. I should have it hopefully drilled this week then the fun begins!

It will be cool to see a Zeo tank set up again. Not too many have the tolerance to do it. Should be fun to follow.

Sumps ready... Still waiting on the equipment to ship from Proline in Canada. Did a little preliminary plumbing as well, I wanna add another manifold with a gate valve in case I wanna add a calcium reactor down the road.

Kool! What happened with the last system?

An Urchin crawled on the effluent of my HOB Refugium and caused it to overflow behind my tank. That morning, I just hooked up a new power-strip with more sockets and didn't set a drip loop yet. I came home from the bars at 2am to about 10 gallons on the floor, my powerstrip sizzling, and smoke everywhere. I tore the tank apart and have my corals in holding. I suffered no losses in the move so i'm very lucky.

Honestly it was a freak accident.... I just introduced the urchin a few days earlier too (he's since been made trigger food).

Hey Bogg, I noticed in your signature that also use Zeovit. What products do you use?

I'm definitely using the KZ stones, but I was thinking about sticking to strait vodka (possible VGV) instead of zeostart. I also have had tons of luck with brightwell Coralmino too so I may continue to use that. Would love some advice from someone has been doing this for awhile. I've been on the zeovit forums but their all very adamant about sticking to strict KZ products.

I had the NAC6 for awhile and it was an ok skimmer. I could never get it dialed in the way I wanted to though. I eventually went to an SRO Space Saver. Really happy with the switch.

I use pretty much all the supplements that kz makes
They all do cool things,

In my experience running the full zeovit system since 2003 you might want to run a sandbed (more wiggle room) and you might also want to use a Venturi type skimmer rather than the needlewheel type (too agressive Ime)
But to each is own, anyways it sounds like your just planing on using just the zeolites, IMO if your interested in doing zeovit ("zeovit reef") at least the first 4, start food bac and stones is the way to go, why? Well because its all in the r and d, there's guidelines along all the phases to do so as noted in the zeovit guide, if your experimenting with a hybrid system well then it's all up in the air what will happen, like I said to each is own if you feel like you personally can do better with what you choose to dose/ supplement than go for it, but Ime again the first 4 are the way to go, why? Well I still have my bottle of start 2 I purchased in 03 yup it's still like 1/4 full and it's kept me po4 free for almost a decade it's the 500ml bottle, a few drops of the start are very strong, now I did try vodka and Ime I got a wicked cyano outbreak jme though others have had
Good results but jmo Ime

Funkateer_1
12-02-2012, 08:21 PM
Ya I think i'll stick with the 'main 4' for now especially while I start this whole thing up. Can't argue with results... I'll possibly make adjustments in the future as I re-introduce the acros and see how they respond. You ever have potassium deficiency issues? It seems like that's always an issue for probiotic systems.

I had the NAC6 for awhile and it was an ok skimmer. I could never get it dialed in the way I wanted to though. I eventually went to an SRO Space Saver. Really happy with the switch.

I was going to purchase the Vertex Alpha 170 but after opening up the box I knew there is no way that would've fit in my sump. The NAC6 is a cylinder right? I've always had issues with that style skimmer foaming right. Anytime you do a water change or even look at it funny the water line seems to drop.

It is not a cone. I could just never get it to skim well. I now have the cone and it's pulling a lot darker skimmate and it smells a lot worse too!

Bogg

I don't personally have potassium issues, why? Well I have the kzs skimmer which works great and is gentle on certain elements, I also use scripps natural salt water which has great potassium levels and is grest for zeovit because of the similar levels, kh ca and mag, that work great with the system, if you start with a good level to begin with it shouldn't be a major issue but the Venturi is key here Ime. For some bizarre reason the needlewheel skimmers don't shuck and jive with the Zeo method Ime.

I'll be using DI water with Aqua Vitro Salinity salt. I've used scripps in the past and had mixed results. For me, consistency is the key and good quality salt has never let me down. I've used solid polymers and vodka in the past and always had issues keep my K in check. I usually have to dose daily along with my other elements. Potassium always seems to be a crucial element for Acropora coloration and just curious if it's been an issue for you.

I really want the KZ S Skimmer and the price is fairly sane (>$600 isn't bad compared to the vertex line). I'll keep the magus for now but if it isn't up to snuff it'll probably just sell it. Space is quickly becoming an issue in the sump too.

I'm planning on doing the plumbing tomorrow, the only thing i'm waiting on now is the Vertex RX-Z Reactor.

Kool are you going to do the Zeo 14 day cycle thing?
If your going to start with the needlewheel skimmer I would highly suggest getting the Kalium (potassium) test kit and some k balance and k strong, I'm just trying to help not bashing or anything it's just Ime it doesn't work, not only will you deplete the potassium but seems to just be too harsh if you will on elements etc when combined with the zeovit method Ime you'll get much better results, pe and overall health from a Venturi type or Beckett skimmer, even just look into making yours into one if you want to. Also I'm not sure if you read the guide but do so I even printed myself out a version to re-read. http://www.korallen-zucht.de/files/zeoguide_103_english-1.pdf

From the zeovit guide:

As mentioned earlier, the basis of this method relies on export of harmful substances through skimming. Continuous use and frequent cleaning should be conducted in order to keep the skimmer performing at its maximum level. The results are better when the skimmer is adjusted in order not to produce too much concentrated skimmate (wet skimming). We would like to point out that it is our thought that needle wheels may precipitate certain elements and destroy plankton. These elements, e.g. such as potassium, will need to be re-added to the system. Do not use a skimmer that is too oversized or employ wet skimming if you use a needle wheel skimmer. We recommend the use of venturi type skimmers.

Funkateer_1
12-04-2012, 06:42 PM
I've been digging around alot online about this skimmer issue. It seems like the general consensus is that needle wheel skimmers will pull out too much and make to small of air bubbles which could potentially export good elements (though technically any skimmer would do to some extent). I'll probably kink the air back just a hair to make bigger bubbles (did that on my last skimmer and it pulled very well). I've always been on top of dosing/testing and strict weekly water changes. If I notice element deficiencies or just unhappy acros, the skimmer will be the first thing I swap out.

I will be doing the 14 day cycle using all new real reef rock. Still torn on whether or not to add sand :confused2:.

On another note, this bad boy finally showed up...

Brief Update...

The tanks been going for about 6ish weeks now, my DI filter was old and I got some ugly algae as a result... hence the lack of pictures. It's mostly gone thanks to some kz coral snow, kz biomate, and tropical abalones. It's not 100% clear but wasting away everyday. As for equipment, i'm still torn between the Vertex Libra Doser and the avast marine Ca reactor with an extra de-gassing chamber. Common sense is telling me to stick with doser because I got all my parameters set with my stock solutions already... but I can't argue the results of a Ca reactor once it's all dialed in. I also still need to hang my lights... work and school is just taking all my free time. Anyways, here are some pictures...

I love the reactor. It's built like a tank and has a nice check valve inside if your the kind of person that does the '3 hours on/off' method. It does get a lot of rubble at the base, but that's a common criticism for pretty much every zeo reactor. It has a nice pop-top lid too so replacing the media is a breeze.

The zeovit supplements aren't too bad. Its really a few drops one day and a few more another day. Many of their products are incredibly concentrated and last years. What I really need is a automatic dosing system for elements. I'm torn between dosing pumps and getting a calcium reactor. I've been eyeballing this one from avast...

13!

What's your dosing schedule ?

Up to 13 lol.

Lets see....

- Zeostart 3: .25mL twice a day or .5 daily.
- Zeobak: 2 drops twice a week
- Coral Vitalizer: 2 drops daily
- Sponge Power: 2 drops daily
- Pohl's Xtra: 2mL daily
- Coral Snow: 1mL daily
- Zeofood: 2 drops twice a week
- Zeospur: 2mL Weekly
- Aminos: 2 drops daily
- Biomate: 2 drops twice a week

The real pain are the elements...

-CaCl2: 20mL Daily
-MgCl2: 20-50mL Daily
-KCl: Up to 50mL Daily to keep it around 400ppm
-NaHCO3: 30mL Daily

I'll let you know next time I do an order. I might try some of that KZ carbon to see if I get can still get fuzzier acros with it.

Here are the parameters as of a few days ago...

KH: 6.8
Ca: 400
Mg: 1260
K: 380
NO3: Undetectable
PO4: 20ppb
Salinity: 1.025

I am a little worried about overdosing the spur. I hope it kills some of the darker bases and colors up my ORA Bellina but I don't want my SPS to look too 'anorexic' if you know what I mean. I think I'll do it every other week... I just got it in today and did my first dose an hour ago.

The doser is amazing and worth every penny! All my parameters sit exactly where they should and it doses my KH, CA, and Mg and in 3 equal amounts (4 for mag) throughout the day. It has a ton of extra features including a quick dose, vent, and full Vertex Integra compatibility when it comes out. The pumps are really strong too. This dosing pump was one of the best investments I've ever made in the hobby.

I changed it a little bit...

The two actinics are on one channel from 11am-12pm and the other four are on 1pm-9pm. I have a Truelumen actinic LED strip as well.

New toy, Vertex Libra 2.5L vessel for dosing KH buffer. If my KH consumption rates stay the same, it should last me about a year before I have to refill. I have a Hanna magnetic stirrer for it as well. That thing makes a serious cyclone at full blast. I will be slowly replacing all of my dosing containers with this over time.

I'm collecting equipment to set up what will very likely be a 100 gallon zeovit tank. If everything goes according to plan, it should be set up by the end of the year. Its a collection of stuff that I already have, equipment that I bought from forum members here, CL, and new. I'm still on the fence about the tank can't decide if it should be glass or acrylic. I'm leaning towards acrylic because it's easier to move. I did design a standard 100 gallon in Solidworks that has the overflow outside the tank. Only a slot is visible in the tank. Its not that i would save a lot of money on the tank if i went DIY. Just the satisfaction that I designed and built it. Ridout plastics would cut the material, and if I got really lazy they could build it. ;-) I really like your tank. :-)

What kind of camera do you use to take pics? I've been looking at dosers. How do you like your vertex? I'm looking at that and the bubble Magnus doser.

Percula clowns are my favorite fish.

Teddyboy,

I personally prefer glass aquariums, mostly because they don't scratch like acrylic. I also really love the clean look of a rimless/eurobraced aquarium, but to each is own. I love my Vertex doser, very easy to use and calibrate. Bubble Magus and GHL are also great brands too.

I use a samsung galaxy S4 for my pictures.

So much for the acrylic aquarium! I picked up a standard 100 gallon undrilled tank and cabinet stand for $50 from another forum member. Tha tank is in great shape. I just need to clean it up and leak test it. The stand is in decent shape, but I would like to reinforce it and add a few mods to it aside from striping the black paint and stain it. I couldn't pass it up. :-)

You're going to need a bigger tank.

I think the tank could be lighter, I use Zeospur and B-balance often. I don't know why they stay so dark. Those are the two additives that should pastel up the colors.

I usually post pictures every week or two, but after coming home tonight I cannot believe how well my tank is doing. Color is lightly pastel but sharp and deep, corals are encrusting faster, and my stonies have never been fuzzier. Everything I ever wanted in a zeo tank!

The past year has been a struggle. I had poor to mixed results. Not necessarily the zeo, but there is a learning curve. I changed lights, dosing methodologies, had a chiller/sold it, changed bulbs without acclimating, jacked up the established sandbed, switched salt brands a bunch of times, and did whatever I could to never let the tank settle. I think this relocation is gonna be a fresh start!

I think removing my nasty fine sandbed that I stupidly covered with new sand (killing all my aerobic bacteria) with a clean fresh bed helped, I also added a severely oversized chiller (1/2 hp) allows me to cook the tank with my halides but my temp never gets over 77. It fires up for about 5 minutes every hour with the main lights on. I dropped my lights about 4 inches closer to the tank too. Still cannot shake that $#%^ing bubble algae. I think a foxface is my next purchase.

Hopefully the tank will be an acro forest before I know it!

This is an awesome tank. I'm new to the hobby but I'm looking to do something with the same look as this very awesome

I'm glad you enjoy the thread!

Reefing is a very enjoyable and rewarding hobby to those that are patient and invest in the right equipment. Here are a few pointers to someone getting into the hobby...

- With the right conditions and care, soft corals especially can grow like weeds. Start with them then move into stony corals.

- Be careful where you get your fish from. Everyone starting up wants nemos and dorys at the best price. A lot of our fish are wild-caught and bring in much stress and disease. Always quarantine new fish and purchase from a reputable source. Trust me, QT EVERYTHING.

- Don't buy cheap equipment. You will just wind up buying everything twice. A lot of the cheaper lights, skimmers, etc. don't work well from the start.

- Support your LFS. SDR is a great community with good deals, but never forget your LFS. They rely on your business to stay afloat and offer good advice and a place to see these animals and equipment in person. Aquatic Warehouse, Aqua SD, Pet Kingdom, and Shipwreck Cove are awesome and reputable stores!

- Invest in good test kits and keep a journal of everything you do. If you ever run into an issue (and you will) having records makes it much easier to troubleshoot.

- Lastly, take all advice with a grain of salt. There are many opinions and methodologies with reefkeeping. All these ways can work when done properly. Find what works best for you and stick to it!

I've had way to much caffeine tonight and will probably be up working on homework for awhile. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Not trying to toot my own horn, but I've set up quite a few tanks and happy to offer advice.

Thanks for the quick reply Is the Pohl's Coral Vitalizer something a non zevoit user can use? I have a 120 gallon tank and it is difficult to target feed my acans.

I will be sitting up a 40 breeder SPS tank and maybe I can try the 4 system it seems that you went to 13 quickly, can one stay with the 4 system. Also do they make small skimmers for a zevoit system?

You can use CV in any non-zeo system. It's just concentrated coral food. I think it's got a little diluted oyster eggs too, due to the color, smell, and need to keep in fridge.

If acans are what you're working on, add a little Amino Acid LPS too. It'll really help them get nice and fluffy.

The basic 4 system is just for the zeo life support (keeping nutrients low and maintaining water quality) all the other additives tweak color and do fun things. The smallest KZ skimmer on the market is the Rev. S deluxe like mine. It's rated to 300 gallons but man does it skim like a beast. I swear it will be the last skimmer I ever buy. If I ever wanted to upgrade again, I can use it on any system.

I saw your PM, sumps looks off to a good start!

I'd calculate the flow for your reactor. You don't need a lot coming out for it to make an impact. I just take a liter measuring cup, time how long it takes to fill, multiply by 3.8 and you got your GPH.

You only want ~100GPH for your system.

Hahaha.... Ya that's a radiant. He's been in there for awhile. Unlike the Marjorie Pair and the tuskfish, he's not suicidal. The mated pair of sixlines I added seem to play well with him too.

You can always add one more. That's my motto. I almost put a pair of valentini puffers in the other day.

Lol, he may be cramped sharing a 25 gallon with a large leopard, yellow coris, neon dotty back and clown.

Colors doing better, bubble algae slowly going away thanks to a foxface and about 10 emerald crabs. Just dosing start, bak, and sponge power to see if I can help the colors bounce back.

Another day, another tank move.... last time I moved it across the house, this time im moving it a few miles to my new house. I have more than enough water made up and buckets ready. Should be less painful than last time.

Thanks Randy, I had a service guy friend of mine help me.

Move went very well. Everything's all hooked up but the dosing pump and halides. Im gonna give the tank a few days to settle before turning them back on.

Marc what do you have for a cuc?

Marc what do you have for a cuc?

I have a couple trochus. Thats about it for snails.

I had some bubble algae get out of hand and introduced about a half dozen emeralds. My radiant wrasse wiped most of them out over time.

I also keep a foxface, he's my number 1 algae grazer.

Any issues with the Flame Angel nipping at corals? Thinking about adding one to my tank.

The nip. Alot. I just cope with poor polyp extension, I love those fish so much.

Tanks doing well, kind of on auto pilot now. I'm out of room and have had to limit my livestock to match my fish's voracious appetites. They seem to be hard on acros but leave stylo, birdsnest, and other types of stony corals alone. Right now, I'm doing occasional water changes, feeding the fish, and routinely add the basic zeo life support additives. I'm adding other zeo additives based on my coral's appearances but not stuck on a schedule. It's nice having a tank that I can just leave alone and enjoy.

The only stock I recently added was an established female leopard wrasse from my brother-in-law who broke down his tank. 3 years old in captivity and eats everything. Playing with other three wrasses in the tank very well. Still thinking about adding a pair of tobies and maybe a different genus of angelfish.

Thanks for the info! Do they tend to have more of an appetite for LPS or SPS? Or both?
