View Full Version : My new 90G reef

So I've been planning this upgrade for about 9 months. Ran out of room in this tank

http://www.sdreefs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69899

any my yellow tang started hiding in the rock work, so I decided to give him more swimming space. Sometime I doubted my plan, since going from a 75G to a 90G really only gives you more real estate vertically, but after running 4 separate power heads in the 75G in addition to the return flow, figured I wanted to take advantage of a "new" tunze 6205 I got my hands on.

So 3-4 months ago, I bought a used 90G setup for cheap. Had a stand that needed refinishing, and although it had an overflow and drain, had no return holes. So I tried to get a whole drilled in the back pane for a return, without really knowing if this glass was tempered or not. Doh! It cracked. Took me about 2 months to give that tank away on craigslist to a reptile owner. So I'm left with a stand that needs refinishing, and no tank. Nice project, huh?

Learned that I could get a new tank built by Charlie and the fish tank factory in LA at an affordable rate, with customization I needed to fit the stand I had. Standard 90G, polished edges, overflow with 1.5" drain and 0.75" return...

Here's the stand after I stripped what paint and stain I could get off it.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk210/nasotang2/Murrieta-20120614-00250.jpg

still had some dark stain in the wood, so I had to change plans (wanted it stained mahogany) and use solid primer/paint. Did Kilz on the inside, 3 coats of paint, a couple coats of polyurethane and some spar on the top.

Unfortunately I did very little photodocumentation during the build, so I don't even have a pic of the before and after on the paint job, or the new tank without water. Spent a good amount of time working with plumbing and a sump I bought from Brian Refragger in the garage, testing my standpipe/maggie muffler and return plumbing. Return pump is a Rio17HF, and I had some leaking when I used this with a check valve and had flex PVC, so I had to change up that design and go with some hard pvc on one side of the check valve, and flexible on the other side to the bulkhead.

So finally, on 9/29, I pulled the transfer from the 75 into the 90 and it went pretty well. Here's sand and no water on the new system

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk210/nasotang2/sand-2.jpg

This stand has the drawback of two very narrow doors in the design, so I made sure I left some space behind the tank in case I had trouble getting my skimmer out for cleaning. Skimmer is bubble Magus NAC6 from my 75G. It's almost impossible to get good pics of the inside, but here's what I got

from behind

my "new" 2 part dosing pumps, yea!!!

So here's what the tank looked like on Day 1 after transfer. I'm using 3 AI Sol Blues from my 75G with light hangers I made, I've got the 17HF with flow accelerator for return, the tunze 6205 is a controllable stream pump, and I've got an MP10 that I use just to mix up the flow on reefcrest. I keep the MP10 on while I feed to give a little bit of flow.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk210/nasotang2/day-1.jpg

I took alot of rock out of the 75G, left the 90G rockwork pretty light to give myself more sand for LPS. A few zoas are the only softies, and the rockwork is dominated by SPS.

Here's the whole setup, including Chiller and ATO reservoir on the side

Nice John, I also like how that wall ultimately could have at least a 300g up against it.

Looking great john...let me know when u trim that nasuta[/QUOTE

Will do, I got some of that vivid rainbow from Brian too, can't wait to see how that colors up

[QUOTE=smirkis;829053]beautiful tank man! do you dose anything if you don't mind me asking? any reactors? those sps look amazing

Thanks, I actually use brs two part on dosers. I've been using flatworm stop from kz for about 4 months, I think it really makes the polyps extend. But I also added two t5s to my 3 ai sols, that could also help with the color. I think my nutrients are high for an sps tank, my skimmer is a bit undersized, but I do 10 g water changes weekly. I'm lazy, so I never test nitrates or po4, pretty rarely check the other params either but I think my ca and alk are dialed in the way I've been getting growth... This is about a year after my last tank switch too, so it does take patience to start getting the colors and the growth. Unfortunately I'm in desperate need if an upgrade again and I've got no cash!!!

Oh also dose strontium and potassium on top of the two part and mag. It's not all good though, I've got low level cyano I can't get rid of and bubble algae as well...my greatest advancement lately was learning how to take pics under the LEDs using Raw and the photoshop white balance tool!

No man, lots of trial and error and reading about others approaches. The recent ones are all with look down tube but the real trick is white balance. LEDs really screw up the camera's sensor...if I shoot through my glass it's a big difference. But thanks!

You'll have to share your knowledge, I'm having the same issues with the LED's. I will certainly start using a veiwing glass next time!

Yeah key is to shoot in raw if possible and use lightbox or photoshop to set the white balance. You can shoot through glass, but mine is standard glass and is often dirty...

Thx not really a lot of work. Feed once a day, 10 gal water changes once a week. Scrub the glass, change the filter sock, and frag whenever it gets crowded. That's about it, keeping on top of ATo water and skimmer cup. And patience...

Thanks, here's an fts at the end of the year. I've been clearing out stuff to make space for more rock to mount more sticks.

I hope so, my frag racks are collecting gems...I just fragged about 50 pieces over the holidays, but will probably have accidental frags after I rescape a bit next weekend.
