View Full Version : 190g build

I am only in the planning stages of my build. I am working on a design for my tank stand to have everything in it. I want to have it so I can do water changes with a turn of a valve. the bigest hurdle i need to overcome is making everything fit into my stand.

Here is a picture of what i drew up on excell. Any inputs are welcome. Due to size constraints I will have a 40 breeder for my skimmer sump, 15 tall for a fuge and 15 tall to use for water changes. My big concern is if the 15g tanks will be big enough to be effective. The red lines are drains and the light blue is from the return. its kind of hare to see but the two tanks on the right are 15 gallon tank. 1 for a fuge and one for a water change tank. the one tank on the left has two filter socks and the skimmer with a bubble trap and return pump.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff191/poakley723/IMAG0208.jpg

Before I even get to the sumps I need to drill my tank for over flows and returns. I want to do a bean overflow and two returns. I also want to eurobrace my tank. So i have a big hill to climb.

Have to come back to this later!

A 10% water change on that size tank would be 20g so I think a 15g water change tank will be a bit small...

What are the dimensions of your tank? I had a 60x30 footprint and I had a 40 breeder and a standard 20g in there with a little room to spare.

The tank im planning(tank is still in wrapper in my garage) is 60X30X24 Peninsula. Is your tank going to be 24" or 30" wide?

I suppose when you wife is with you at a fish store and says you should buy a brand new 180g aquarium and skimmer to go with it you dont say NO.

So here is what I am going with now.

Started building my tank stand today. I got all the pieces cut for the top and bottom of the stand. Tomorrow I will be cutting the virtical supports and angle iron for my corner suports and start welding it up. Just need to decide what i want to used to coat it. Right now I am throwing around a few different ideas. With my budget I will be coating it myself with either rino liner type of stuff or a crack coat type of paint. I just want to make sure it doesn't come off. dont want any rust.

Got my stand all welded together yesterday. I am going to make doors which attach by magnets so they can be taken completly off and be out of the way. Once I make the doors I will add corner gussets which will add rigedity to the stand and be a place for the doors to atach to.

Looks pretty solid.
I've seen people use the rhino liner w/ success, not a bad way to go in keeping w/ the budget.

poakley723
04-08-2012, 09:57 AM
I am debating between rino lining and a wringle paint.

davocean
04-08-2012, 11:46 AM
If it were me, after cleaning up your welds and making sure there was no rust at all, I would spray the snot out of it right away w/ kilz or rustoleum, and then hit it w/ rhino liner or similar.
I'm not familiar w/ wringle paint.

poakley723
04-08-2012, 01:02 PM
I am not to sure of the durability of the wrinkle paint so I will probably go with the rino liner. As long as i get the texture i want on the surface and good durability i will be happy.

Here is my sump, or should I say what will be my sump. 80g tank. Now I just need to figure out exactly how to build my diffrent chambers kind of like my enitial design i started with. obviously my original design was going to go under the first tank I had which was much taller. I still want to have everything built into it so i can do water changing without wheeling my wifes arch nemisis into the living room. So I am aiming for a thirty gallon water change section, 20 gallon fuge 20 gallon section for my skimmer and filter socks and lastly a 10 gallon where i will have ATO with a float valve and my return. I think I may be running an external pump but not sure.

My buddy (SHERRERB) told me that fuges are suposed to drain from the bottom is this true. Not that I dont trust him or anything just curious. I know its not hard to make that happen it just takes one extra baffle. Other then that one question I think I got this under control. Any questions or sugestions would be helpfull

I paid 7 bucks for the 1 1/2 inch bulkhead and like ten dollars for the ball valves. it was $70 for everything in the box plus two 3/4 inch ball valves which are backordered.

Looked to me like everything was about half price.

So would 1/4 inch glass be sufficiant for the baffels in my sump. I am pretty sure it will be but just better to get more opinion from the forum. Let me know.

I drilled my sump just a minute ago! Glad to find out that the tag on the bottom which said not to drill it didn't mean it was tempered. Now I just need to drill my baffels and glue them in. I will post pictures up tomorrow.

If anyone down south wants some holes drilled just let me know and we can do this.

poakley723
05-05-2012, 10:36 AM
I drilled my sump and baffles and have all my baffels installed with the exception of one. I actually got and extra piece of glass because the place i got the glass from messed up and cut me 2 pieces that were bigger. I have to wait until monday to get my last piece but i am ok win that because it is actually making my bubble trap a little better. Instead of just a simple U bubble trap I have and extra trap with 4 baffels.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff191/poakley723/IMAG0253.jpg

The bottom section is about 20 gallons and will be the section I mix water in for doing water changes.

The next section up from that is going to be my fuge. It is about 15 gallons. Each of these two baffles are drilled for bulkheads. as long as I haven't done any thing retarded, which is completely possible, i should be abel to turn two valves and do a 20g water change. there will also be a bulk head at the bottom of my water change section of the sum where I will be able to drain the water change tank through a drain pipe running under my house and outside.

The last to sections of my sump will be the return pump and a skimmer section. I don't really like the size of my skimmer section ,kind of small, but it will work for now. In the future I may build a new sump with a 100g tank to make things fit a little better if this sump just doesn;t meet my expectations. Last thing I have done to the sump in I drilled a hole at the top for a bulkhead. This bulk head will serve as a fail safe which I hope never gets used. Its only purpose is to drain off water if my sump actually fills to the level of that bulkhead.

Just for everyone to know GLASS DRILLLING IS EASY. I bought a 1 3/8 diamonf hole saw at Lowes. It was $40 bucks. Considering the the glass company wanted $50 a hole I wasn't to mad about the price. I could probably return the drill bit if I really wanted to. Used it to drill 4 holes, two in 3/8 inch glass and 2 in 1/4 inch glass. I did it all free hand with water running over the area I was drilling. If anyone down here wants some holes drilled let me know. I also have a hole saw for 1.5 inch bulkheads.

Very exciting! One step closer!

Thanks JAT.

So i finished up with my sump this morning. Doesn't look much diffrent just took all the entertainment out of it and siliconed in the other side of some baffels I couldn't get to with the cd's in the sump.

When I was done i couldn't help myself and had to play some more so i hooked my skimmer up to the 20g cooler i have full of live rock! First time I have used my new skimmer! Seems to work pretty good!

I don't have any pictures but have ordered and bought a lot of thinks recently.

I have a 45g tub full of curing rock.

I droped my tank stand off yesterday to get powder coated and should get it back monday or so.

I ordered a 100gpd RO/DI system and float valves last night from Purewaterclub.com.

Today I will be picking up my return pump heater and the last plumbing parts I need.

My lights are in and over at JAT's house just waiting to be picked up.

Sherrerb and I bought a complete set up last weekend where I got some more stuff. I got a red sea wave maker and 4 korolia power heads, and a bunch of other stuff including LR and coral.

Last thinks I need to do is just assemble everything. More importantly i need to install the flooring in my living room which will be happening this weekend.

Getting so close. Can't wait to have this set up.

Picked my tank stand up from the poweder coater today. It turned out very nice. I got it with a wrinkle coat just like the case of a harly davidson motor. I still haven't completed the last door because I didn't have enough flooring left over from my dining room. I am putting the same flooring in my front room so once I finish it I will build my last door. The doors are all atached with magnets and it worked out great.

Looooookin' darn good Nick.

I like the contrast of the stand, the crinkle coat... and the wood flooring with the light framing. Going to look awesome on top of the floor itself. A great contrast... especially if you have some art-deco in your house that's black. Maybe some fish-art in that crinkle coat! ;)

Anyway... nice change to the normal "hidden metal stand". I hope it stays lookin' new... and clean, and gives you years of enjoyment. It's surely built to withstand the weight... times 10!

Keep the progress pics coming!

... and those lights, they'll make the build that much better ... Or so I hear! (lol - just kiddin!). But seriously, let me know how you like/dislike them once you get your tank in and bubblin'!!!

In the last few days since my sone was born I have made lots of head way on getting my tank into the house.

Built onto the bottom of the plywood which serves two purposes. I wanted to have my tank clean so the stand is the same size as the tank and this piece of plywood was routered down to fit under and inside the bottom rim of my tank and hold it on place in case of an earthquake or something. I also added some blocks of wood to support my plumbing and to serve as cable holders.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff191/poakley723/IMAG0280.jpg

I also have built a frame for my wavemaker and DJ power strip. Since these pictures I have coated the plywood with kilz for a little water protection.

Hey man I really like your build! I was wondering if you zip tied all the wires up real tight in your sump ever or thought about using some loom to put them in for the ultra clean look.... I cant wait to see your canopy! spend the money on the good stuff and make it look real nice! How long until you add some real fish in?

Interesting Hummmmm I have lots of ruble. I may have to try this out. I already do have a piece of flat LR.

Flat rock recipe... Eggcrate + pond foam + live rock ruble= flat pieces. I've done it several times. Cut eggcrate to size, cover in foam, add live rock ruble to give it a more realistic look.

The foam wouldn't float with the LR on it. I am sure you would only be using a small amout of foam.

I already did zip tie the cords togather but putting the black wrapping on it is a good idea. I still need to do some work on my electrical because I an not happy with it. There are a few things that i couldn't get a drip loop on because of the cords being to short.

The canopy will be built the same way the stand was built. Steel and powder coat with solid wood doors magnatized on. The magnet doors work GREAT by the way.

Don't under estimate the flotation of Pond Foam. When I did that in my last tank, I was amazed at how bouyant that stuff is. About half of the "rock work" in my 300g setup was foam. It looks great and I wish I had thought about making actual shelves with it. It's also alot cheaper to do it that way and you can make it exactly the size and shape you want instead of scouring the LFS' rock bins trying to find that one perfect piece. :)

Your tank is looking good!

Makes me feel better to know that LOL. I actually used the old 220 that i had for an electric dryer. Just split that into a 110 at 20 amps.

The PBT is doing good. Still eating everything and has healed up from his encounter with the gold rim tang we had.

They definatly do seem to grow. Not sure exactly what i am doing any diffrent then any one else but I am very happy and am just going to keep it going as it is.

Need to start fraging a lot more. I haven't really ever got into the coral fraging except accedental frags.

Time to by a nice set of SPS shears.

I am still using the LEDs fro JAT. I have had a bit of a nitrate problem and lost my big green birds nest and some other small colonies. I am getting it under control and things are turning around.

I will post some pics up later this week.

Thnanks for the props.

So I have lost almost everything. All my SPS and most everything else. Ally I was able to save was my frogspawn and Duncas. There are a few things still alive in my tank. Not sure exactly went wrong but whatever it was it was a lot because it's been almost three weeks with water changes everyday and the red slime keeps growing. I think softies and LPS is the direction I will be going when my water gets under control. Hit me up if you have any LPS FRAGS or softies with good color for sale.

Is it cyanobacteria? Use chemiclean and follow the directions to a T to get rid of it

that sucks man, sorry to hear ...softies can poison the water did you try running carbon for a bit?

poakley723
03-06-2014, 01:33 PM
I need to go get some carbon. Thanks for pointing that out.

I already know it's ciano algae and I am running gfo, I turned my lights to half intensity and am doing two water changes a week.

poakley723
03-06-2014, 07:22 PM
Tested my water tonight and added carbon. Hope the carbon fixes my tank because everything is right chemistry wise.

Nitrate 0
amonia 0
nitrite 0
alk 8
cal 460
mag 1470

Any other suggestions are welcome. FYI I did a 100 gallon water change with scripps water and have been doing 20 gallon water changes twice a week.

poakley723
03-09-2014, 09:17 PM
How long should it take you to get my tank back on track and what else can I do. My 180 crashed about a month ago. I am running gfo , carbon, did a 100 gallon change and have been doing 20 gallon water changes for the past three weeks since. What else would you recommend if anything? Maybe it just takes more time.

So I have had two sea hare DIE in my tank!

Talk about a box of death!

I got them both out before they disintegrated but holy crap.

I believe with the hair algae outbreak my tank is about done being a box of doom and may actually become beautiful again!

poakley723

Picked up a SMR1 AND an XL sea side reactor.

SMR is running carbon and the sea side XL IS RUNNING bio pellets. A few weeks and hopefully everything will be running smooth.
