got this 150gallon 3 sided starfire tank on the FS section from jt milstead (who was selling for his friend). Thought it was an awesome deal and i had to get it! This tank was almost the size i was looking for which was a 5x3x2.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m94/skratchiechan/IMG_0997.jpg

bought this stand from john at sdaquariumrock. Beautiful stand! cant wait to stain this bad boy! went with the higher stand so that i dont have to hunch over to see the tank :)

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m94/skratchiechan/IMG_0996.jpg

will be using my old 55gallon dt as a sump when its ready to go lol!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m94/skratchiechan/IMG_0998.jpg

going with the minwax ebony wood stain and will be polying it after a few coats of the ebony stain.

Exciting stuff Tae. How'd the picture frame turn out?

I think with a tank like that where the pressure is spread out throughout the bottom pane and doesn't have a plastic trim, you need a solid piece of wood on top. Someone please correct me if I am wrong but I just wanted to put out a warning.

i am pretty sure that is for acrylic but i dont think i would need it for glass.

Tank is going to be awesome Tae, If the tank does not have a bottom trim then there are 2 things needed, A full piece of wood and also some foam to protect from defects on the wood. If it has bottom trim then none is needed. This is from all of the tank manufactures that I have asked. Are you going to put it in the same spot as the old tank?

This tank has the black pvc on the bottom im pretty sure, no foam needed. I personally would add atleast one cross member in the center, and a piece of plywood on top to be safe.

The pvc on the bottom of the tank is a good substitute instead of the old foam trick but yes you will need a top on that stand. Glass is not completely rigid and will flex without the proper support. Go to home depot and get a sheet of furtiture grade 3/4" of thicker birch plywood and some trim to tack nail to hide the edges. Saw this tank before it was delivered to you and is a amazing tank.

I used the ebony stain on my stand, my suggestion is do in sections and wipe down with a rag immediately after applying as this stain soaks in very fast and is very dark. Test on my stand top first and applied 1 coat and left it without wiping and came out almost black, once I applied the clear coat it seemed even darker so TEST FIRST

yes so ive noticed! i was practicing on my picture frame and it did come out real dark, thanks for the tips! what part of HD do i get the trim from?

Definitly needs a top added to stand. Ironcross nailed it. 3/4" ply top and some trim to it. Best way to attach trim is with a micro pin nailer. GL.

Just go to the section they have their molding and pick something that matches the stand you got. Yeah that stain can be tricky but the end results are amazing

Make sure to shake the stain can! I used the same stain on my stand and didn't shake it at all. It came out looking dark brown which was great until I went to stain my hood a month later and shook up the can. When I put the stain on the hood it was super dark (almost black). In the end it works, but the stain doesn't match exactally so shake your can can!!!

Stir stain thoroughly. If you shake it creates bubbles....

Good eye Brad, I would add a 3/4 ply top and add a couple joists to keep that from sagging.
Also agree w/ JT on stirring, not shaking stain, unless you use the shaker machine at HD(which I recommend) and not so much for bubbles but because there are a lot of solids and those cans tend to sit for a while, bubbles will wipe out when you wipe stain.
Clear coat is a different story, don't want bubbles there.
I did an espresso finish for Jessy using a mix of jacobean and ebony, 3-1 respectively, just an idea.
Ebony gets real dark on pine, even w/ the conditioner, and good on you for getting that, much needed for pine.
I'd do a test spot inside the cabinet first to make sure you like it.

got the stand stained with the ebony (1 coat), really loving that color!
i think im just gonna stick to one coat and poly the rest tomorrow...
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m94/skratchiechan/IMG_1015.jpg

this is what happens when you see a chair next to you, but decide to sit on the coffee table to stain the side of the stand!!! lol. i fell right in that thing, luckily the glass turned into little squares :)
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m94/skratchiechan/IMG_1009.jpg

when i got home from coldstone with the wife the wood conditioner was knocked over and couldnt finish the door today (that was around 850pm)... called home depot; close at 9pm :(

i will be finishing the poly and staining of the doors tomorrow and maybe a lil touch up here and there... until next time.

Tae, of course... a pleasure to help out a fellow reefer! It was ALL YOU man... you've got some great ideas, and it's always a good time to learn from others. Plus, your wife offering up a beer run at 10:30... AM, gotta' love it (even though we happily declined).

... anytime you need, just let me know. Your the type of person (giving, honest, respectful...etc) that make the reefing community fun. One big reason I love to chat it up with fellow enthusiasts. Not the know-it-all type, who bore ya with how great their stuff is! ...so, call on me anytime. ESPECIALLY if your trading frags!! Thanks for the additions to the tank (once again)!!

It's coming along nicely!! The light bar/mount looks great!! And now you can park a tank on your stand, so... GET-ER-DONE ... ehhh Vern?!

... plus, MADJAMEY did all the work!!

NOW, get the plumbing done, get 'yer trim over that plywood edge... (let me know if you need back up on that)... and fill'er up!! It's time to get some water flowing... LEDs will be here soon enough!!

Im either thinking brs or npx...I went with the two little fishes phosban reactor 150 (modded for more flow)

I would use a 90 elbow but the output is right where my baffles are... so I hanged a filter sock on the output :)

Tae,

Looking great cant wait to see it up and running, Are you going to run more than one MP40? I have found on my 150 that it isnt enough, I am going to get an MP60 for one side so I dont have to run at full power on either my MP40 or MP60. They are loud at full speed.

Just a thought, I would be concerned that a mp60 might be a touch harsh if you are trying to get all the flow you need/hit all dead spots out of that one PH, I personally think it's a touch overkill, and a mp40 might be a better call for you.

I thought of that but there are some design issues I do not like with the MP40 that the MP60 addressed, and if I turn it to its lowest settings then it is only 10 watts of wide smooth flow

Remember, my 240 has (2) MAG18s, and a MAG12 returning water to it for flow, through 5 loclines and a spray bar. I've got enough flow for what I have in livestock, but... my pumps are wide open (running full throttle). ....and of coarse you know I don't use powerheads/MPXXs.

Awesome Tae...!!! Looking great!!

I love the LED controller. Amazing. It'll simulate the sunrise and sunset throughout the WHOLE day if you'd like it to. You can span morning to evening, and only allow the LEDs a specific window of 100% brightness. Super cool. AND... play with your moon setting, it's default is 2%. I'm going to dial mine in tonight.

EDIT: Dialed in the MOON portion of the controller, using 4% white and 6% blue. PERFECT illumination for a "moon" night (I like it darker, then lighter... so the fish can sleep) ZZZzzzzzzzzz

My lights used to come on at Noon, and go off at midnight. Now, they ramp up starting at 9:30... are at full bright (100%) by about 2PM and start to ramp down about 9PM.... off by 11PM. Love the new cycle!

Nice job man! I'm still waiting to set up my very first tank. Taking my time to try and do things right. Love the sand, the rocks and the coloring!

here is another update...ive utilized a ATS and im amazed how its turning out. the sand is now white again, instead of brown algae on it and the GHA has receded and looks to be dying off

here is the thread i started for the ATS

i also Diy'd my own dosing system, thread can be viewed here

it was pretty fun using it, i recommend this to anyone who wants to get rid of GHA... it gets out 80-90% of the GHA and the CUC and fish will nibble at the rest... i think one more session with the algae mower vac and ill be pretty happy! now i have more room for corals!!!:bounce::bounce:

thanks! but the mower does nothing but being cute... it was the work of the algae mower vac, foxface and the scopas.

about the coraline; I don't think mower eat that kind of alage and I'm barley starting to see growth of coraline as of late

haha I'm sorry I just re read your post and now makes perfect sense! yes I would defiantly recommend the algae mower vac unless you are willing to wait until it goes away naturally...

LOL..I could see how you took it the first time though! Did it really scrape up the rock very much? I finally have the coralline I've been waiting for, so I don't want to tear it all off.. :) But don't think I can wait it out either..it wants to take over!

it did break it up some but not to worry! the spores of the coraline should spread even more hahah!
