Where is the best place to get Live Rock in San Diego. Maybe some good Marshall Island. When I say best, I mean coralline encrusted/ semi-cured quality , good priced? Thanks in advance.

I'd say either BlueLagoon (although I've never been), or Jeff's in LA. I bought a box of Kaelini for $2.50/lb. Out of the box, its $2.75/lb.

I had to go up to Jeff's to get my marshall island rock. I haven't seen if BL carries rock, but the other LFS don't usually have much good stuff

Im up in Cerritos every other weekend. How long of a trip us it up to Jeff's?? No LFS stores to reccommend? I have bought my live rock in the past from OG. Its been two years and I am starting a new tank, wanted to see how things have changed..... Thanks for the input.

you said 'semi-cured' which leaves both jeff's and blue out. theirs is uncured. of course for the prices its well worth it.

i got 90 pounds of waltsmith premium fiji from blue and its great. i got 66 pounds of ultra fiji from jeff's, and while not quite as good as the walt smith its pretty darn good. neither is fully cured yet though.

both types are covered in coraline (its pretty bleached out right now), but the waltsmith has more 'crags' for hitchers, that is why i like it.

it takes about 90 minutes (or slightly more) to get to jeff's from san diego. it is well worth the trip and i highly recommend it even if you buy from bluelagoon. jeff's has large bins that you can pick your rock out of (several different types) or you can buy it by the box. while i was there jeff said that ordinary fiji premium was the most colorful rock there is, the only reason other types cost more is because there is not as much, and he has to pay more. fiji premium (not 'ultra' premium) is also the cheapest.

jeff's is a great place and i hope to get live sand from him soon, that is if his live sand has creatures in it.

when you compare jeff's or blue to the LFS its roughly 3.00 vs. 6.00 per pound. but the 3 is uncured and the 6 MIGHT be semi-cured.

I've bought 'cured' from both Marine Depot (in Anaheim) & Dr. Mac. The MArine Depot stuff is AWESOME. Lots of life & color... If I bought again it would be through them. You can pick up to avoid shipping charges.

Walt Smith

The price from Blue Lagoon was closer to 2.50 per pound when I purchased from them.

It came in very fresh and was easy to cure, took less than three weeks.

The best way to get live rock is to buy it from people who are selling their stuff. One time I found a crazy deal from a guy up in riverside. Sold me about 100lb of awesome, coraline algae covered rocks, some books, equipment, and a super nice clam all for $150. Look on ebay (where I found the guy) or on reefcentral if anyone is getting out of the hobby.
