any chance he's a shield limpet?

It's most likely a Keyhole limpet. If so, though not highly destructive, no they are not reef safe.

I've got a few shield limpets (the shells are usually completely covered by pitch-black mantle) in the big tank... no problems at all. just real cool (nocturnal) algae eaters.

Got a whole bunch of caribbean keyhole limpets (shells are various shades of brown, no significant mantle) in the fuge, and they seem to be pretty harmless algae eaters too, but much slower-moving and occasionally like to head for the overflow or other tricky spots.
