Coraline algae cleanup

What is the best way to remove coraline algae from equipment? I have canister filter that will be moved from my reef tank to my FW planted tank. And I do not think all that calcium would be good for my plants.

Soak everything in a solution of vinegar and regular tap water for 30 minutes or so and then scrape it off with a plastic bristle brush or one of those plastic aquarium scrapers...toothbrushes work too.

Vinegar is fine if you're patient, muretic acid solution works much faster if you're not.
