Me and another member on this board were talking about a trade where i might end up with a 500 gallon tank. So I was just wondering, what type of equipment would I need and how much $ will i have to shedd out to turn this baby into a full blown reef.

The rough figure I've heard tossed about is $30/gal.

Since you're in the business, it may be 2/3 of that figure, but its still gonna be LOTS.

Hell, my little 90-gallon tank is at or over that (over, way over I'm afraid).

A couple/ few years ago there was a couple in town that were running a monster 500-gallon reef tank. Complete with the big monster downdraft skimmers, huge iwaki pumps, big halides and all the rest of the toys one would expect to see on an ultra-high end tank of the day.

Part of it's price tag included an $800- $900 a month utility bill (of which the greatest majority was the tank). I believe it was taken down for a move or remodel or something such. I don't know whether they ever set the tank up again or not.
