What kind of paint is best to use on aquarium stands? I went to home depot but didnt get much info from the workers in the paint department. I was told that I could paint it and then use a finishing wax to really give it that professional look? What do I need to do to make my stand look like the picture above? Man I wish there was a class I can take for woodworking and finishing furniture.

This is a picture that I took of the inside of a stand to show the overspray. It definitely looks like its spray painted. Is it not? I want to get my stand to look like this and if it is as easy as priming the wood then spraying with black spray paint that would be great!

Another view of the inside of the stand.

When I looked at the outside of the stand, it was smooth, even, professional. You could see the grain lines and I thought that it was a really professional stain job. But when I looked inside I was surprised to see the over spray. I dont think the guys who manufacture these stands would take so much time to stain and re-stain to get a great finish. This looks like it was spray painted very quickly. And it looks really really good. I have to know how they did this!

That is a Lacquer Finish. It can only be applied by spray application. There is quite a bit of skills/experience required to get that high end finish quality. I have a shop and a division that specializes in finishing of cabinets and furniture if you want to out source it to be professionally done.

The cabinet in the first picture is not stained. It is an oil based paint.

Palomar community college has some great woodworking classes including some finish-specific ones.
