are you using tap water to top off? if so that is it. you need to use ro/di filtered water to top off.

buy water from drinking stations like galcier or water mill

college budget here too... 25c water stations work well. I use a gallon every 4 or 5 days so its real cheap for me :D

In La Jolla they charge 35c though... What a rip off!

I seriously suggest spending some time on this site asking questions. It will save you tons of time and money.

Indirect light like sun light in the day may also be a contributing factor.

I'm braced for a storm of protest, but here I go...

Get some Chemiclean. It doesn't look from the pic that you have any really expensive lps or sps in there and (for what it's worth) I've used it many times on my tanks with softies, inverts and fish with no problems.

Use the standard dose and add an airstone but turn off the skimmer for two days. Then turn on the skimmer and do 20% water changes each day for the next three.

It also helps to stir up the sand a bit around the glass and blow off the rocks with a turkey baster after dosing. Try to remove as much of the gunk as you can if you do. I've also used a siphon to remove the top layer of sand into a bucket to rinse and then put back.

Everyone will tell you that you need to find the root cause of your problem (and you do...), but sometimes you just need to catch up first.

P.S. Feed less, more flow.
