My first peice of advice is do not put anything into your tank that you can not test for. Get some good test kits for Alkalinity, Calcium, Magnesium, Nitrates, Ammonia, etc. Make sure you know what is in your water and the condition it is in before you start dosing chemicals. I would also ditch the hydrometer and get a refractometer. They are much more accurate. Get a good understanding of your water chemistry and then you are in a better position to react to it and fix what needs fixing.

And come to the SDMAS meetings and talk to people for advice. Asking here and on other boards is great, but it can't replace some good, quality face to face time with fellow reefers.
