ok power is back on after an hour... My clown fish are up at the top of the tank but not breathing heavy or swimming on their side so they'll be just fine. I'll do some research on the batter backup for my k2 to see if I should go that route or if the battery air pump will work fine in my small tank...

depending on temps, they should live for a day or 2. skimmer/flow isn't necessary to survive. most important is temp and quality. glad everythings okay

flow is important for oxygenation... I read somewhere that fish start to die after either 2 or 4 hours of no flow, don't remember which. It may be time to look into getting a vortech with battery back up. :/

Fish are shipped all over the world for over 48 hours with no flow and no oxygenation. I wouldn't recommend going that long without an air pump in the tank, but for a day there shouldn't be any real issues.

I have had my tank completely shut down for about 14 hours due to a blackout. Absolutely no problems at all.

that was probably just vortech's site where I read that... Why does everyone make a big deal about battery back ups then?

Manual flow (ie. stirring the water with a spatula of sorts) is acceptable I've read. Temp and quality are key as smirkis said.

backups are good to have as a "just in case" assurance. it is possible that power could shut off for a week or 2 or 3 if something major happens at the sdge distribution. in those cases, generators/elec pumps are very important to have. but those kind of power outages don't happen often, and if it did, this whole forum would prolly suffer all at once

if daves tank shut off for 14 hours im not too worried about it. If there is a blackout longer than 24 hours a battery backup wont do a whole lot anyway.
